Softball Closes Out Spring Break Trip

Lions bounce back in narrow 5-2 setback to Wisconsin-Superior in game two this afternoon after Shenandoah posts 16-0 victory in game one

VIERA, Fla. (March 11, 2026) – Emerson College battled back in its second game of the day as the Lions wrapped up its spring break trip with a pair of setbacks at the USSSA Space Coast Classic today. Shenandoah posted a 16-0 victory over Emerson this morning, before the Lions battled to a 5-2 decision against the University of Wisconsin-Superior this afternoon.

Game 2: Wisconsin-Superior 5, Emerson 2

Wisconsin-Superior broke open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the sixth as an Emerson throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by senior Samantha Swartz with runners on first and second scored three, including Swartz circling the bases, to provide the difference.

Swartz finished 1-for-2 with the run scored, while senior Larissa Snyder and sophomore Peyton Bennett both tripled for UWS, and sophomore Tessa Twedt recorded a double.

Freshman Bethany Lewis earned the win, allowing just one baserunner over her 1.2 innings of relief for UWS with a strikeout. Sophomore Abby Mitchell allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk over the first 5.1 innings for the Yellowjackets.

Junior Cal Sheehan doubled, and classmate Riley Caiazza tripled and scored a run for Emerson. Sophomore Kari Sorenson and first year Aislinn McCoy each drove in runs for the Lions. Sheehan took the loss in the circle (1-4), surrendering five runs, just two earned, on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks over 5.1 innings.

Emerson grabbed the lead in the third as Sheehan led off with a double and first year pinch runner Tessa Burosso scored on a single down the rightfield line by McCoy. Wisconsin-Superior grabbed the lead in the home half of the third as Bennett tripled to left center with one out and then scored on a two-out triple to right by Snyder who would score on a single up the middle by senior MyKenzie Leccia

Emerson pulled even in the sixth as Caiazza tripled down the right field line with one out and scored on a single to right from Sorensen. The Lions left two baserunners on in the frame, and Wisconsin-Superior took the lead for good with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Game 1: Shenandoah 16, Emerson 0 (5 innings)

Shenandoah grabbed a three-run lead in the top of the first inning and did not look back against Emerson this morning. Junior Meghan Gaskins scattered five hits and two walks over five shutout innings for the Hornets striking out five to earn the win (3-0) in the circle.

Junior Allison McQueeney paced the Shenandoah lineup, hitting 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, while first year Keagan Cooper finished 2-for-2 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Junior Kelly Hartman was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for the Hornets.

First year Malena Cardinale recorded two of Emerson's five hits in the game, finishing 2-for-3. Junior Cal Sheehan took the loss (1-3) in the circle for the Lions, allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 3.1 innings.

Cooper sparked Shenandoah's three run first with an RBI triple and then the Hornets broke the game open with 11 runs between the third and fourth innings. McQueeney legged out an inside the park three-run home run to highlight the third for the Hornets.

Emerson (1-7, 0-0 NEWMAC) will head back north where it is scheduled to open its home schedule on Tuesday, March 17, against Lasell University for a non-conference doubleheader at Rotch Field at 3 p.m.
