Women's Basketball Battles Past Wellesley, 54-42

Gould and Dodd lead Lions to 2-0 start in NEWMAC play

WELLESLEY, Mass. (January 21, 2026) – Emerson College pulled away down the stretch to improve to 2-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play after a 54-42 victory over Wellesley College in women's basketball action at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse tonight.

Sophomore Lindsay Gould led Emerson's balanced offensive output in the defensive battle with 14 points in her first career start, connecting on 4-of-12 three-pointers, with three rebounds. Junior Kendra Dodd added 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting from long distance with three rebounds, while classmate Claire English grabbed a game-high ten rebounds for the Lions with four points, three assists and a career-high matching three steals.

Junior Elise Arnold contributed a season-high nine points and six rebounds with two assists for Emerson, while senior Sofia Canter connected on all three attempts from beyond the arc for a season-high matching nine points.

Sophomore Ava Shane was the lone Wellesley player in double-figures with a game-high 16 points with eight rebounds and four steals. Junior Trinity Barrow added seven points, five boards, eight assists and four steals for the Blue.

After the two teams combined for 12 points in the opening quarter, Emerson outscored Wellesley 10-3 over the first four minutes of the second to grab a nine-point lead (17-8) with an Arnold layup. The Lions carried a four-point cushion (24-20) into halftime and then extended the lead to ten (30-20) after a pair of free-throws by senior Bri Frongillo three minutes into the second half.

Wellesley closed the gap to three (30-27) with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter, led by three points from Shane. Emerson scored the first ten points of the fourth to open a 13-point advantage (40-27) following a layup from Arnold with 7:37 to play. A Shane jumper a minute later trimmed the Lions lead to eight (40-32) with 6:11 remaining, but Canter and Dodd sparked an 8-0 spurt with three-pointers that pushed the lead to 16 (48-32) with 4:22 on the clock and Wellesley would not get within single digits again.

Noteworthy

  • Dodd scored in double figures for the 20th time in her career with her fourth double figure outing of the season, while Gould netted double-digits for the sixth time this season.
  • English grabbed double digit rebounds for the seventh time this season (20th career).
  • Emerson buried 6-of-7 three-pointers (85.7%) in the fourth quarter to finish shooting 11-for-26 (42.3%) from beyond the arc.
  • Frongillo dished out a season-high seven assists for the Lions.
