BOSTON – Emerson Women's Volleyball earned another NEWMAC win on Saturday (Sept. 27) as it bested Clark, 3-1, as part of a tri-match at Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym. The Lions were also swept by Bowdoin as part of the tri-match.
EMERSON vs. CLARK
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 3, Clark 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

It looked like it was going to be a long day for Emerson as it opened the day, trailing Clark 8-3 in the first set. However, the Lions were able to grab the lead in the middle of the set with a five-point run that made it 12-11. Clark regained the lead at 13-12, but would give it right back to the hosts.The Lions got very hot late in the set, closing out the 25-16 victory with eight consecutive points.

Emerson carried that momentum into the second half, going up 8-1 out of the gate. The Lions denied every opportunity the Cougars had to get back into the set as they cruised to a 25-12 win.

However, Clark refused to go down without a fight as it opened up a 10-5 lead in the third set. Emerson rallied to go up 15-13, but the Cougars were able to tie the match at 19-19. They outlasted the hosts down the stretch, securing a 25-23 victory.

The stage was set for a difficult fourth set as the teams traded leads early on. The match was tied as late as 20-20 and Clark went to match point at 24-21. But Emerson was able to come from behind to take the set and the match with a 26-24 decision.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

First year Shirley Yu led the way for Emerson with her team-high 12 kills, while her classmate Lizi Horning followed close behind with 10 kills.

Setting up those powerful attacks was the sophomore setter duo of Chloe Hokenson and Sophia Schiappa, who had 22 and 12 assists, respectively.

Defensively Hokenson and libero Sami Kim each had 14 digs, while middle Hannah Miller had four blocks (all assisted) to lead the team.

The Clark offense ran through sophomore Isabella Alcott who had a match-high 19 kills. Junior Julia Dopazo had 16 assists and Yumeng Liu had 12 digs, both team leads.
EMERSON vs. BOWDOIN
THE BASICS:

Records: Lions (8-6) | Polar Bears (7-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED:

Emerson fell behind early in its second match of the day, trailing Bowdoin 7-3 after a five-point run by the Polar Bears. The Lions were able to battle back to string together six straight points to regain the lead at 10-8. The set remained close with the teams even at 13 apiece before the Polar Bears took the lead for good, eventually winning 25-20.

It was all Bowdoin to start the second set as well with the visitors establishing a 6-0 lead to open the middle set. Emerson would close the gap to as little as one twice, but the Lions could not take the lead as they dropped the set 25-19.

The Polar Bears started set number three with a 5-1 lead. The hosts tied the score at eight, 12, 14, and 16, but could not pull ahead as they fell 25-21.

First year Shirley Yu was the only Lion in double-figures with 10 kills to lead the team with sophomore Chloe Hokenson adding 14 assists.

Sophomore Sami Kim and junior Lauren Yoo each had seven digs to lead the team.

Junior Rachel Dickerson also had seven kills in the contest.

The Bowdoin leaders were Alison Smith (14 kills), Cameron Shelly (32 assists), and Skye LaMendola (17 digs). Anna Yeh was also in double-figures with 14 digs.

Conference play continues for the Lions on Tuesday, Sept. 30 as they travel to Newport Rhode Island for a NEWMAC meeting with Salve Regina. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
