SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Emerson Women's Volleyball began NEWMAC play with a win on Tuesday (Sept. 23) evening as it defeated Mount Holyoke, 3-1, at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first game set the tone for what was going to be a tightly contested conference opener as neither team could extend the gap to more than three early on. It was the hosts that were finally able to put together a bit of a rally. Trailing 13-12, the Lyons would go on to win nine of the next 10 points to establish a 21-14 lead. They would go on to finish the set 25-18.

Emerson would offer a strong response in the second set, going up 10-3 early on. However, Mount Holyoke would battle back to recapture the lead at 13-12. The Lyons would build up a three-point lead on multiple occasions, but could not hold off the visitors' attack as Emerson came back to win set two 25-23.

Mount Holyoke went up by five in the third set with a 10–5 advantage. Emerson was able to tie the set up at 11 before MHC regained the lead at 13-12. The Lions then went on a five-point rally to establish a 16-13 gap. The Lyons were able to tie the set one more time at 18-18, but Emerson pulled out the 25-19 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Looking to force a deciding set, Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 9-5 lead. However, Emerson responded with a 5-0 run to jump ahead 10-9. The hosts would tie the set three more times, but it wasn't enough as Emerson closed out the 25-17 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

Sophomore setter Chloe Hokenson barely missed a double-double with 24 assists and nine digs.

First year Shirley Yu and junior Rachel Dickerson continued to lead the Emerson attack with 17 and 13 kills, respectively.

Sophomore Sophia Schiappa also recorded double-digit assists with 13 and also contributed three blocks (all assisted) defensively. Junior Hannah Miller also had three block assists.

Sophomore Sami Kim and junior Lauren Yoo each had 10 digs to lead the team.

Seniors Madeline Barton and Elle Rimando both had double-doubles for Mount Holyoke with Barton producing 17 kills and 15 digs, while Rimando recorded 13 and 13. Senior Sadie Duffrin had a match-high 32 assists.
UP NEXT:
Emerson continues its conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 27 as it travels to Clark for a tri-match. In addition to the conference match between the Lions and the Cougars, both teams will also play Bowdoin in a non-conference contest. Action for the Lions begins at 11 a.m.
