WESTON, Mass. – Emerson Women's Volleyball pushed its record back over .500 on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon with a pair of wins in a non-conference tri-match with Regis and Husson at the Regis Athletic Complex. The Lions outlasted the host Pride in a five-set epic, before sweeping the Eagles in their second match.
EMERSON VS. REGIS
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In the opening match of the day, the hosts got out to a fast start, establishing a 5-1 gap. The first lead change came in the midst of a four-point rally for Emerson as the Lions went up 12-10. However, the Pride scored the next five points to go up 15-12. It looked like Regis would be able to make that lead stand up, but with the Lions at ate away at the lead scoring nine of the final 11 points to win the set 25-22.

Set number two was back-and-forth early on until Emerson had the first real sustained rally of the game. Trailing 13-10, the Lions scored the next six points to take a 16-13 lead. Regis would get back on top with a 5-1 run before Emerson roared back with a four-point rally. It was all Pride down the stretch however, with the hosts winning seven of the last eight points for a 25-22 victory.

Streaks were the story of the third set, starting with Regis' 5-1 run to open the middle act. Each team had at least two runs of four-plus straight points, but it was the Pride who ended up on top with a 25-20 advantage.

Needing a victory in set number four to extend the match, Emerson jumped out to an early 8-1 lead. It eventually stretched its lead to as many as 10 at 18-8 and then 21-11, but Regis was able to close the game to 22-18. But it was too little too late as the visitors forced a deciding set with a 25-18 win.

In the deciding set, the teams traded leads throughout, but it was Emerson with the last hoorah as it picked up the 16-14 result to win the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

First year Shirley Yu and junior Rachel Dickerson led the way offensively for Emerson with the two highest kill totals of the match at 17 and 14, respectively.

They were able to put down those attacks thanks to a team-high 33 assists from sophomore setter Chloe Hokenson.

Fellow sophomore Sophia Schiappa served up some difficult balls with a match-high seven aces.

Sami Kim (23, match high), Lauren Yoo (17), and Hokenson (11) all had double-digit digs.

Junior Avery Mola had a double-double for Regis with a team-leading 13 kills and 17 digs.

Sophomore Alexandra Rivera led the Pride and the match with 35 assists and first year Gwen Arnold registered a team-high 18 digs.

The Pride duo of first year Beatriz Paulo and junior Grace Fabiano each had a match-high six block assists.
EMERSON VS. HUSSON
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 3, Husson 0
Records: Lions (6-5) | Pride (1-9)
HOW IT HAPPENED:

The two teams played an even match early on before Emerson used an eight-point rally to open up a five-point lead at 16-11. Husson then scored three straight to close the gap to 16-14, but that was the closest the Eagles would get as the Lions took set number one, 25-19.

The Eagles were the ones to come out strong in the second set, scoring the first five points and 11 of the first 15 to establish a 11-4 advantage. But the Lions would chip away at the lead and finally pulled ahead at 18-17. It would be a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of the set, eventually going to 29-27 with Emerson on top.

The third set would be another tight one, once again going beyond the 25th point. It would be Emerson outlasting its opponent in the end, completing the sweep with a 28-26 decision.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

Emerson first year Dalena Garrett was the only student-athlete with double-digit kills as she finished 13 attacks. She also had an impressive .550 hitting percentage.

Emerson setters Hokenson and Schiappa both had double-digit assists with 17 and 10, respectively.

The Lions Kim was the lone student-athlete with double-digit digs at 11 and junior Kori Meissner had a match-best seven aces.

Setter Peyton Hooker was the leader for the Moose with 22 assists in the match.
UP NEXT:
Emerson will hope to extend its win-streak to four games on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. as it travels to South Hadley, Mass. to open NEWMAC competition against Mount Holyoke.
