-0BOSTON – Emerson junior Carmen Talavera broke a scoreless deadlock in the 83rd minute against Wheaton to lift the Lions to a 1-0 result to open NEWMAC play on Saturday (Sept. 20) at Rotch Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Emerson dominated possession and offensive opportunities in the match, peppering the Wheaton goal with shots throughout the first half, resulting in a 10-5 shot advantage.

However, the Lyons first year goalkeeper Lauren Kelley was able to keep the hosts off the board.

The Emerson attack continued to pile on opportunities after the break, but were not able to break through until the 83rd minute when first year Kate Baldock sent a ball across the box, which was subsequently headed in at the far post by Talavera for the only score of the game.

Emerson had a decisive advantage in offensive opportunities, outshooting Wheaton 22-7 with a 15-4 differential in shots on-goal.

The Lions also won seven corner kicks to the Lyons one.

Both goalkeepers played the total 90 with Emerson goalkeeper Hailey Forman making four saves in the win, while Kelley denied 13 opportunities for Wheaton.

First years Abby Cockerill and Kelsey Yoshikawa each had three shots on-goal in the contest.
