Talavera’s Late Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Wheaton In NEWMAC Opener

-0BOSTON – Emerson junior Carmen Talavera broke a scoreless deadlock in the 83rd minute against Wheaton to lift the Lions to a 1-0 result to open NEWMAC play on Saturday (Sept. 20) at Rotch Field.

THE BASICS:

Score: Emerson 1, Wheaton 0

Records: Lions (3-2-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) | Lyons (4-2, 0-1 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson dominated possession and offensive opportunities in the match, peppering the Wheaton goal with shots throughout the first half, resulting in a 10-5 shot advantage.

  • However, the Lyons first year goalkeeper Lauren Kelley was able to keep the hosts off the board.

  • The Emerson attack continued to pile on opportunities after the break, but were not able to break through until the 83rd minute when first year Kate Baldock sent a ball across the box, which was subsequently headed in at the far post by Talavera for the only score of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Emerson had a decisive advantage in offensive opportunities, outshooting Wheaton 22-7 with a 15-4 differential in shots on-goal.

  • The Lions also won seven corner kicks to the Lyons one.

  • Both goalkeepers played the total 90 with Emerson goalkeeper Hailey Forman making four saves in the win, while Kelley denied 13 opportunities for Wheaton.

  • First years Abby Cockerill and Kelsey Yoshikawa each had three shots on-goal in the contest.

UP NEXT: 

Emerson will have a full week to prepare for its next match which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 as the Lions continue NEWMAC play with a trip to Salve Regina. Kickoff in Newport, R.I. is scheduled for noon.
