Maira's Brace Not Enough as Men's Soccer Falls to Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Kyler Maira recorded a brace for Emerson on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon, but it wasn't enough to lift the Lions over Springfield in their NEWMAC opener as they dropped the decision 5-3.

THE BASICS:

Score: Springfield 5, Emerson 3

Records: Lions (3-2-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) | Pride (5-2, 1-0 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson got on the board first as Maira found the back of the net for the first time on the afternoon in the 22nd minute.

  • That score would hold until the second half when a deluge of scoring would take place, starting with Maira's second of the day just over two minutes into the second half with an assist from first year Alex Lucas.

  • Springfield would draw even less than ten minutes later as the Pride got goals from first year Gianni Pazvakavambwa and sophomore Thomas Quiterio in a less than two minute span.

  • Things would settle in until 73rd minute when the hosts broke the tie on a goal from sophomore Robby Herrera with the assist going to junior Connor Policarpio.

  • Three minutes later senior Parker Thornton tacked on some insurance for the Pride and then three minutes after that Thornton doubled up his scoring to give the home team a 5-2 lead.

  • Emerson would get one back in the 80th minute on a Lucas finish, but it would not be enough as the Lions fell 5-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The first half was a pretty level matchup with the two teams totaling eight shots (five for Emerson, three for Springfield). However, the second half was a much different story as the offense got ramped up resulting in 21 total shots and seven goals.

  • Emerson had the advantage on corner kicks, winning seven to Springfield's two.

  • Emerson goalkeeper Asa Roberts made two saves on the day, while Springfield keeper Noah Pote made six stops.

UP NEXT:

Emerson's next matchup is a non-conference road contest on Tuesday, Sept. 23 as the Lions travel to Bridgewater State for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
