Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 22 Amherst

BOSTON – Emerson Women's Soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 22 Amherst on Wednesday (Sept. 17) night at Rotch Field.

THE BASICS:

Score: No. 22 Amherst 2, Emerson 0

Records: Lions (2-2-2) | Mammoths (4-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The offensive opportunities came early and often in the match as there were five shots in the opening 10 minutes. Included in those were two shots on-goal by Emerson student-athletes.

  • However, it was Amherst, ranked No. 22 nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, that really controlled the offense in the first half.

  • The Mammoths got on the board first when junior Katie Pedersen put one past the Emerson keeper in the 29th minute.

  • After outshooting the hosts 4-1 to open the second half, the visitors were able to tack on an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Junior Becca Button was the goal scorer with an assist from sophomore Kate Donlan.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Amherst had a decisive advantage offensively registering 22 shots to Emerson's five. However, the Lions made the most of their chances putting three of those shots on-target.

  • The Mammoths also had a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.

  • First year Rowan McCrary had two of Emerson's shots with one of them being on-goal. First year Abby Cockerill and junior Zoe Simmons also had shots on-goal.

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Forman made seven saves for the Lions, while senior Lulu Fickes made two saves for the clean sheet for the Mammoths.

UP NEXT:

Emerson will look to bounce back from Wednesday's setback as it welcomes Wheaton to Rotch Field for the NEWMAC opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
