Women's Volleyball Drops Decisions to Wentworth, Rivier

BOSTON Emerson Women's Volleyball dropped both decisions in a tri-match against Wentworth and Rivier on Saturday (Sept. 13) at Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym. The Lions fell to the Leopards, 3-0, and the Raiders, 3-1.

EMERSON VS. WENTWORTH

THE BASICS:

Score: Wentworth 3, Emerson 0

Records: Lions (3-4) | Leopards (6-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth was the first team to break away in the first set, using an eight-point rally to open up a 14-5 lead. It would go one to win the opening set 25-13.

  • Emerson took its first lead of the match in set two, scoring the first two points and then opening up an 11-6 advantage. However, Wentworth strung together a six-point run followed by a stretch of seven consecutive scores to regain the edge. The Leopards won set two 25-20.

  • The third set was tied as late as 15-15. The Lions scored net to give them a 16-15 lead, but the Leopards responded with six straight points to grab a lead they wouldn't relinquish. They won the set 25-20.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • First year outside hitter Shirley Yu tied for a match-high with 12 kills, the only Lion in double-digits.

  • Setter Chloe Hokenson led Emerson in assists with 19.

  • Defensively, Emerson junior Kori Meissner had a team-high eight digs, while fellow junior Hannah Miller had five blocks (all assisted).

  • For Wentworth, junior Emma Sanders contributed 12 kills, while junior Olivia Vaughn registered 29 assists.

  • Leopards senior Amanda Zweifler and junior Ainsley Gregson both had double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively.

EMERSON VS. RIVIER

THE BASICS:

Score: Rivier 3, Emerson 1

Records: Lions (3-5) | Raiders (3-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In set number one, neither team could establish a sizable lead until Rivier used a four-point run to open up a 16-13 gap. The Raiders would hold the lead for the remainder of the set, which they won 25-20.

  • It was more of the same in the second set as the teams traded leads all the way down to 17-17. At this point Emerson pieced together four consecutive points to take a 21-17 lead. However, Rivier would win the next seven points to reach set point at 24-21. The Raiders finished the set 25-22.

  • Looking to avoid the sweep, Emerson started off the third set with three consecutive points. The Raiders were able to pull ahead thanks to separate four-point and three-point runs, leaving the score at 14-11. But the Lions were able to roar back with a pair of four-point runs of their own and eventually force set four with a 25-22 victory.

  • Rallies were the story of set four with Rivier using two separate 6-1 runs to build leads of 10-6 then 19-12. Emerson used a 7-1 run of its own late in the set to tie the score at 24-24, but it would not be enough as Rivier took the fourth set, 27-25.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • First year Shirley Yu continued her impressive attacking, finishing 22 attacks to lead the match. Her classmate Lizi Horning also registered double-digit kills with 10.

  • Sophomore Chloe Hokenson had a season- and match-high 42 assists, while libero Sami Kim registered a match-high 25 digs. Junior defensive specialist Lauren Yoo also had 11 digs.
