CHESTER, Pa. – Emerson Men's Soccer got back in the win column Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon as it traveled out to Chester, Pa. to take on Widener in a non-conference matchup at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. The Lions picked up a 2-1 victory thanks to an early second half goal by senior Cade Mallett.
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 2, Widener 1
Records: Lions (2-1-2) | Pride (1-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
After a feeling out period early in the match, Emerson took control offensively, outshooting Widener 6-1 in the first half.
-
That sixth shot was the first one to get past the goalkeeper as first year Nick Mirogiannis gave the Lions the 1-0 lead with an assist from sophomore Zebulun Byaruhanga.
-
It didn't take long after the break for Widener to equalize as seniors Michael Burckley and Ryan Toporowski connected to bring the score even just 100 seconds into the second act.
-
However, the deadlock wouldn't remain for long as Mallett scored the eventual game-winning goal less than ten minutes later.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-
Emerson dominated in the shot category, firing 14 attempts to Widener's four. The Lions also had four shots on-goal to the Pride's one.
-
The Lions got forward to win six corner kicks, five coming in the first half.
-
Junior goalkeeper Wylie Jelinek did not have to make a save in the victory, while Widener first year Chemar Hamilton stopped two shots in a losing effort.
