Women's Volleyball Splits Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emerson College women's volleyball team went 1-1 at the Bobbi Brown & Steven Plofker Gymnasium to open up the 2025 campaign on Saturday, taking a five-set victory against Simmons before falling in four sets to Endicott.

THE BASICS:

Score: Emerson 3, Simmons 2

Records: Lions (1-0) | Sharks (0-1)
 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Simmons won the opening set, 25-23, bolstered by a six-point run late in the set. 
  • The Lions retaliated with a 25-16 second set, after which the Sharks reclaimed advantage in the match with a 25-22 third set.
  • Emerson rode a strong finish from two kills and an ace to close out the fourth set, 25-18, and sealed the win with a 15-8 deciding frame.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Emerson hit .236 in the match while holding Simmons to a .095 hitting percentage. 
  • Rachel Dickerson, Chloe Hokenson and Sophia Schiappa all had double-doubles in the season opener.
  • Dickerson led the offense with 14 kills to go with 12 digs.
  • Schiappa added 13 kills at a .375 clips and also contributed 10 assists. She was just shy of a triple-double, with eight digs.
  • Hokenson had a well-rounded effort with 10 kills, 34 assists, seven digs, four aces and a pair of block assists.
  • Dalena Garrett hit .318 with nine kills in her collegiate debut.
  • Lauren Yoo led the back line with 19 digs and added three aces.

EMERSON VS. ENDICOTT

THE BASICS:

Score: Endicott 3, Emerson 1

Records: Gulls (2-0) | Lions (1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Endicott took a 2-0 advantage, 25-16 and 25-19.
  • A lineup change for the Lions paid off with a 25-13 victory in the second set, holding the Gulls to a .036 hitting percentage.
  • The two teams traded runs in the fourth set, but Endicott ended the match with six-point run, claiming the set, 25-17.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Endicott hit .240 for the match, while Emerson hit .178.
  • Rachel Dickerson recorded another double-double, with 16 kills and 10 digs.
  • Dalena Garrett added eight kills behind another efficient showing at .389.
  • Lorena Rivera provided a boost in the final two sets, with four kills on nine swings.
  • Chloe Hokenson recorded 27 assists and eight digs.
  • Lauren Yoo added 10 digs, while Sami Kim recorded seven.

UP NEXT: 

Emerson heads to nearby UMass Boston to square off against the College of Saint Benedict, UMass Boston and Salem State on September 5 & 6.
