BOSTON, Mass.- The Emerson College softball team earned a 3-2 win before dropping a 9-0 decision to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Thursday afternoon at Rotch Field.
GAME ONE
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 3, Worcester Polytechnic Institute 2
Records: Lions (10-7, 2-1 NEWMAC) | Engineers (9-6, 1-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- WPI snagged a 1-0 edge with one run in the top of the third inning.
- Emerson answered with two runs in the home half of the third to grab a 2-1 lead. Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) roped a double to left-centerfield to drive in Sam Zannotti (Dudley, Mass.). Grace Beaulieu (Rochester, N.H.) scampered home on an RBI groundout by Riley Caiazza (Schaghticoke, N.Y.).
- The Lions chalked up one run in the fourth to extend their advantage to 3-1. Izzi Shaffer (Tyngsborough, Mass.) crossed the dish on an RBI groundout by Ally Lacey (Londonderry, N.H.).
- The Engineers picked up a run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Sam Zannotti (Dudley, Mass.) notched two hits, one run scored, and a stolen base.
- Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.) finished with a pair of base knocks.
- Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) posted one RBI and one hit.
- Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) twirled her sixth complete game of the year and racked up a season-high 14 strikeouts.
GAME TWO
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 0, Worcester Polytechnic Institute 9
Records: Lions (10-8, 2-2 NEWMAC) | Engineers (10-6, 2-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- WPI jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning.
- The Engineers tallied three runs in the second to double their advantage to 6-0.
- The visitors tacked on two runs in the third inning to widen the margin to 8-0.
- WPI added a run in the top of the fifth to stretch the gap to 9-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Carly Rosenberger (Conshohocken, Pa.) recorded Emerson's only hit in the contest.
- Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) tossed one innings in her fifth start. Kate Regan (Manchester, Conn.) threw four frames of relief and registered one strikeout.
