Softball Halves Doubleheader with Coast Guard

BOSTON, Mass.- The Emerson College softball team split a pair of contests with Coast Guard Tuesday afternoon at Rotch Field, prevailing 4-2 before falling 2-1 in extra-innings.


GAME ONE
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 4, Coast Guard 2
Records: Lions (16-11, 8-5 NEWMAC) | Bears (9-11-1, 4-7 NEWMAC)


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson notched one run in the second inning to grab a 1-0 edge. Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) looped a base knock down the left field line to drive in Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.).
  • The Lions produced three runs in the third to extend their advantage to 4-0. Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) roped a double to plate Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.) and Riley Caiazza (Schaghticoke, N.Y.). Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) crossed the dish on an infield hit by Ally Lacey (Londonderry, N.H.).
  • Coast Guard got on the board in the top of the fourth, tallying one run to trim the deficit to 4-1.
  • The Bears picked up a run in the sixth inning to narrow the margin to 4-2.
     

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) racked up three RBIs, two base hits, and one run scored.
  • Ally Lacey (Londonderry, N.H.) finished with two hits and one RBI.
  • Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.) chipped in with two runs scored.
  • Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) pitched five innings and posted six strikeouts. Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) worked two scoreless frames to collect her first save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Coast Guard claimed a quick 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning.
  • Emerson answered with a run in the bottom of the second to level the contest at 1-1. Ally Lacey (Londonderry, N.H.) raked a base hit to knock in Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.) from second base.
  • The Bears chalked up the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth to seize a 2-1 advantage. Emma Behel lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Lauren Ragonese from third base.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Ally Lacey (Londonderry, N.H.) posted a pair of hits and one RBI.
  • Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.), notched two hits and scored one run.
  • Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) spun a complete game and finished with two strikeouts in eight innings of action.
