Baseball Downed by WPI

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.- The Emerson College baseball team suffered a 19-8 setback to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The game began on Tuesday but was suspended in the top of the fifth inning. The two clubs met back on the diamond at the New England Baseball Complex Thursday to complete the contest.


THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WPI captured an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
  • Emerson responded with a run in the home half of the first to cut the deficit to 2-1. Nick Hubbe (Chappaqua, N.Y.) crossed the dish on an RBI groundout by Jake Okamoto (Placentia, Calif.).
  • The Engineers chalked up six runs in the third inning to extend their advantage to 8-1.
  • The Lions manufactured five runs in the bottom of the third to trim the gap to 8-6. Braeden O'Connell (Boxford, Mass.) belted his team-leading fourth homer of the year to drive in Nick Hubbe (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Justin Fields (Glen Ridge, N.J.). Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas) roped a triple to left-centerfield to score Chris Ferara (Coral Springs, Fla.) all the way from first base. Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas) scurried home from third as Tobey Roberts (West Tisbury, Mass.) reached base by way of a fielder's choice.
  • WPI tallied three runs in the fourth to stretch the margin to 11-6.
  • The Engineers tacked on four runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 15-6.
  • WPI added four runs in the top of the sixth to widen its advantage to 19-6.
  • Emerson picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to slice the deficit to 19-8. Ethan Gorman (Randolph, N.J.) clubbed his second home run of the season, a two-run blast to knock in Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas).


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Braeden O'Connell (Boxford, Mass.) posted three hits, three RBIs, and one run scored.
  • Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas) finished with two base knocks, one RBI, and a pair of runs scored.
  • Chris Ferara (Coral Springs, Fla.) added two hits and one run scored.
  • Angelo Deer (West Orange, N.J.) started on the mound and pitched 2.1 innings. Oliver Low (Arlington, Mass.) tossed 1.1 innings of relief before Tyler Metcalf (Louisville, Ky.) and Henry Kagan (Pelham, N.Y.) each threw 1.2 innings.
