Softball Downed by Marietta, Nebraska Wesleyan Sunday

COCOA BEACH, Fla.- The Emerson College softball team suffered a 10-6 setback in extra innings against Marietta before falling to Nebraska Wesleyan 11-0 Sunday.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, plating one run to seize a 1-0 edge. Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) motored home from third on an RBI groundout by Mackenzie Rice (Severna Park, Md.).
  • The Lions chalked up two runs in the third to push their advantage to 3-0.
  • Emerson tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth frame to widen the margin to 5-0. Sam Zannotti (Dudley, Mass.) raked a two-out single up the middle to drive in Grace Beaulieu (Rochester, N.H.) and Mackenzie Rice (Severna Park, Md.).
  • Marietta battled back to score five runs in the top of the fifth to level the contest at 5-5.
  • The Pioneers notched a run in the sixth inning to capture a 6-5 lead.
  • The Lions rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tally one run to tie the game at 6-6. Izzi Shaffer (Tyngsborough, Mass.) laced a base hit to right-centerfield to knock in Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) from second base.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Marietta produced four runs to claim a 10-6 advantage.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Mackenzie Rice (Severna Park, Md.) posted two hits, one RBI, and one run scored.
  • Riley Caiazza (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) finished with two hits and one RBI.
  • Grace Beaulieu (Rochester, N.H.) notched two hits and one run scored.
  • Sam Zannotti (Dudley, Mass.) collected two RBIs and one base knock.
  • Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) added two runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) started in the pitcher's circle and tossed 4.1 innings while recording two strikeouts. Kate Regan (Manchester, Conn.) worked 2.2 innings of relief before Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) pitched one frame of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Nebraska Wesleyan sprang for four runs in the bottom of the first inning to race out to a quick 4-0 lead.
  • The Prairie Wolves picked up two run in the second to stretch their advantage to 6-0.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan chalked up four runs in the home half of the third frame to extend the gap to 10-0.
  • The Prairie Wolves added a run in the fourth to push their lead to 11-0.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sofia Holden (Amherst, Mass.) and Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.) both registered their first collegiate hits.
  • Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) also tallied one base hit.
  • Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) made her second start of the season in the pitcher's circle before Sofia Holden (Amherst, Mass.) and Kate Regan (Manchester, Conn.) made relief appearances.
