Baseball Breezes by Alfred in Doubleheader Sweep

AUBURNDALE, Fla.- The Emerson College baseball team swept Alfred 11-4 and 19-2 Sunday to begin play at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida.


GAME ONE
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 11, Alfred 4
Records: Lions (3-1) | Saxons (0-3)


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump ahead 3-0.
  • The Lions added a run in the second to push their lead to 4-0.
  • Emerson tacked on a run in the third inning to widen the margin to 5-0.
  • The Lions plated a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth frame to stretch their advantage to 7-0.
  • Alfred got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 7-3.
  • The Saxons chalked up a run in the sixth to narrow the gap to 7-4.
  • Emerson produced four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to reclaim a seven-run lead, 11-4.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Robby Posio (Queens, N.Y.) notched three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Charlie Coors (Golden, Colo.) finished with four RBIs, two base knocks, and a run scored.
  • Nicholas Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) posted four stolen bases, four runs scored, and one hit.
  • Aidan Rice (Columbus, Ohio) hurled 5.1 innings in his third start of the season and racked up six strikeouts. Tyler Metcalf (Louisville, Ky.) worked two-thirds of an inning in relief and registered one strikeouts. Jake Smith (Boyne City, Mich.) tossed one scoreless frame and collected two strikeouts in his second appearance out of the bullpen.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions scored four runs in the top of the first to secure an early 4-0 lead.
  • Emerson plated four runs in the second inning to double its advantage to 8-0.
  • The Lions tacked on four runs in the top of the third to stretch the margin to 12-0.
  • Alfred picked up a pair of runs in the home half of the third inning.
  • Emerson manufactured three runs in the fourth and added four runs in the fifth inning to cruise to a 19-2 win.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Jake Okamoto (Placentia, Calif.) racked up four base hits and four runs scored.
  • Nicholas Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) finished with four runs scored, two hits, two stolen bases, and one RBI.
  • Torin McCann-Braun (Seattle, Wash.) posted two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Ezra Charles (Baltimore, Md.) tossed four innings and recorded six strikeouts in his second start on the mound. Oliver Low (Arlington, Mass.), Henry Kagan (Pelham, N.Y.), and Shane Moriarty (Greenville, S.C.) all pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
