Baseball Falls to Vermont State Castleton in Extra Innings, 5-4

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.- The Emerson College baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Vermont State Castleton in 10 innings Tuesday afternoon.


THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson chalked up one run in the bottom of the first inning to seize an early 1-0 lead. Nick Hubbe (Chappaqua, N.Y.) laced a single to left field to drive in Nicholas Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.).
  • Castleton scored a run in the fourth to level the contest at 1-1.
  • The Lions responded with a run in the home half of the fourth frame to reclaim a one-run edge, 2-1. Charlie Coors (Golden, Colo.) tagged up and motored home from third base on a sacrifice fly by Jake Okamoto (Placentia, Calif.).
  • The Spartans tallied one run in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Castleton produced one run in the eighth to capture a 3-2 advantage.
  • The visitors added a run in the top of the ninth inning to double their lead to 4-2.
  • Emerson rallied to post two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull even at 4-4. Justin Fields (Glen Ridge, N.J.) scorched a one-out triple down the right field line to plate John Churchward (Davis, Calif.) and Xavier Hall (Rochester Hills, Mich.).
  • The Spartans plated one run in the 10th to snag a 5-4 edge.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Charlie Coors (Golden, Colo.) racked up three hits and one run scored.
  • Nicholas Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) notched two hits and one run scored.
  • Justin Fields (Glen Ridge, N.J.) finished with two RBIs and one base knock.
  • Nick Hubbe (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Jake Okamoto (Placentia, Calif.) both chipped in with one hit and one RBI.
  • Angelo Deer (West Orange, N.J.) started on the mound and pitched seven innings while striking out five batters. Tyler Metcalf (Louisville, Ky.), Oliver Low (Arlington, Mass.), and Henry Kagan (Pelham, N.Y.) all worked one inning of relief.
