Men's Soccer Halts Babson, 1-0

Mallett’s first half strike lifts Lions and snaps Beavers 36-match NEWMAC unbeaten run

BOSTON, Mass. (October 22, 2025) – Senior back Cade Mallett scored the lone goal of the match late in the first half as Emerson College handed Babson College its first Conference road defeat in eight years with a 1-0 decision in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action at Rotch Field tonight.

Mallett scored his third goal of the season with 1:19 remaining in the first half when he pounced on a free kick from sophomore Vigo Cassidy to put Emerson in front. First-year Asa Roberts and the Lions defensive backline did the rest, with Roberts turning aside all four shots on goal he faced to make the Mallett marker stand and post his third shutout of the season.

The win is the first for Emerson against Babson in 13 tries dating back to the Lions first year as NEWMAC members in 2013, snapping the Beavers 36-match unbeaten streak in NEWMAC play dating back to a 1-0 setback to No. 17 MIT on October 23, 2021. Babson had posted a 30-0-6 mark against NEWMAC opponents since, suffering its first road loss in Conference play since a 1-0 decision at Coast Guard to cap the 2017 season – ending a 27-match unbeaten run (20-0-7) away from home against NEWMAC opponents for the defending Conference champions and 2024 NCAA Quarterfinalists.

Sophomore JB Montague finished with four saves in goal for Babson.

Emerson's second-straight win moves the Lions into a tie for fourth place in the NEWMAC standings with seven points along with Worcester Polytechnic Institute with two Conference matches to play. The top six teams in the regular season standings will earn a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament that opens with first round action on Tuesday, November 4.
