Men’s Basketball Knocks Off MIT, 87-73

BOSTON, Mass.- The Emerson College men's basketball team got back into the win-column with an 87-73 victory over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Thursday evening at the Hank Smith Court at Bobbi Brown & Steven Plofker Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson chalked up 11 unanswered points to capture a 22-11 advantage with 9:54 remaining in the first half.
  • MIT responded with a 13-0 run to seize a 24-22 edge with 6:21 left to play in the opening frame.
  • A free throw by Jacob Armant (Arlington, Texas) with 44 seconds to go in the first period gave the Lions a 37-29 lead.
  • The Engineers trimmed the deficit to 37-32 just before the halftime intermission on a corner trey from Michael Zhang.
  • MIT pulled to within two points, 45-43, with 16:28 on the clock as Merlin Gogolin banked in a layup.
  • The home side posted an 11-2 run to widen the margin to double digits with 12:40 left to play in regulation, 56-45.
  • Emerson closed out the contest with a 10-6 span in the final two minutes, including an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw stripe, to snap a four-game skid.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Jacob Armant (Arlington, Texas) poured in a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) finished with 17 points and nine boards off the bench.
  • Lucas Brenner (Miami, Fla.) tallied 14 points while Trevor Arico (Saline, Mich.) netted 12 points.
  • Guillermo Gasset Ruiz (Malaga, Spain) chipped in with seven points, five rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.
  • Emerson shot 54.2% from the floor and 36.4% from behind the arc on the night.
  • MIT finished with a field-goal percentage of 41.5% and connected on 9-of-22 from three-point range.
  • Tim Minicozzi paced the Engineers with 14 points while Merlin Gogolin, Wyatt Mowery, and Parker Spann all scored 12 points.
