Baseball Defeats WPI, 9-8, for First NEWMAC Win of Season

Venue: New England Baseball Complex
Start Time: 3:30 p.m.

NORTHBOROUGH, MA - Emerson baseball hosted WPI on Tuesday afternoon for a NEWMAC matchup at the NEBC. It was a high-scoring affair as the Lions came out on top, 9-8. With the win, Emerson earned their first victory against a NEWMAC opponent this season while also breaking a 15-game losing streak dating back to March 10th in the process. Emerson improves to 4-16 (1-6 NEWMAC), and WPI moves to 15-8 (3-2 NEWMAC).

The game started with a bang for the Engineers as leadoff man Jacob Hand (Sr. - Niskayuna, NY) belted his eighth home run of the season in his first at-bat to get his team out to an early 1-0 lead. WPI would extend that lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Liam Keblin (So. - Newton, MA), putting the visitors ahead 2-0.

Emerson would tie the game in the bottom of the third inning as Briggs Loveland (Jr. - Burleson, TX) scored on a wild pitch and Braeden O'Connell (Fy. - Boxford, MA) drove one in on a sac fly to left field. The Lions later took the lead on a three-run fifth inning. A single through the left side by Keblin in the sixth inning drove one in for WPI, making the score 5-3. Emerson made it a 7-3 game in the bottom half of the sixth as O'Connell earned an RBI on a groundout to second base and Justin Fields (So. - Glen Ridge, NJ) was credited with an RBI on a single to left field.

WPI then took the lead after a big seventh inning. Zachary Roethlein (So. - Pomfret Center, CT) got things started with a two-run homer. Next, Spencer Merrick (Fy. - Abington, MA) drove in a run with a double down the left field line, after which Jonathan Lattimer (So. - Windsor, CT) brought him around on a single to center field. DJ Brooks (Sr. - Danvers, MA) drove in the last run of the inning for WPI on a groundout to third base. The Engineers led 8-7 going into the bottom half.

Chris Ferara (Gr. - Coral Springs, FL) led off the bottom of the seventh off for Emerson and promptly homered to left field to tie the ball game at eight apiece. Loveland would give the Lions the lead with an RBI single to left-center. Jake Morvillo (Jr. - Glen Ridge, NJ), who earned all three outs in the seventh inning, went back out for the eighth and blanked the visitors. Aidan Rice (Gr. - Columbus, OH) entered in the ninth and picked up his second save this season, sealing the win for Emerson in a chaotic game.

Morvillo was credited with the win for his efforts, while Eric DePiero (Jr. - Beverly, MA), who gave up the tying and go-ahead runs was handed the loss. WPI will be traveling to UMass Dartmouth on Thursday for their next game in an out-of-conference matchup with a 3:30 p.m. start time. Emerson will be visiting NEWMAC opponent Springfield College for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, with game one slated to start at noon.
