Baseball Loses One, Wins One in Doubleheader Against Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Emerson baseball visited NEWMAC opponents Springfield College on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader. The two teams split their match-ups, with Springfield taking the first game 13-0 via mercy rule in seven innings and Emerson taking the second game 4-3 after putting together a late-inning rally. The results put Emerson's record at 5-17 (2-7 NEWMAC) and Springfield's at 14-12 (1-6 NEWMAC).

Game One: Springfield 13, Emerson 0
Springfield the lead early, going up 1-0 after Joe Traversa was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Pride had two big innings later on, scoring five runs in the third inning and four in the fourth to go up 10-0.

Springfield would tack on three more in the sixth inning. Emerson was unable to score three runs in the top of the seventh to keep the game going, leading to the mercy rule being called with Springfield leading 13-0.

The Lions tallied six hits in the game, with Chris Ferara recording two. Braeden O'Connell, Justin Fields, Nicholas Favazzo, and Tobey Roberts recorded the other four knocks.

Game Two: Emerson 4, Springfield 3
Angelo Deer started on the mound for Emerson in the second game. In five innings of work held Springfield to three runs (one earned) and seven hits while striking out four and walking five.

Emerson scored first, as Briggs Loveland drove one in on an infield single. Springfield tied it up in the bottom half on an infield single of their own. The Pride took the lead in the second inning, scoring one on a fielding error and another on an infield groundout to go up 3-1.

Both teams were shut out until the eighth inning. Emerson tied the game after two runners scored on a fielding error. One more would score on an infield groundout, putting the Lions ahead 4-3. Aidan Rice, who relieved for Deer in the sixth inning, shut down the Pride's bats in the eighth and ninth to seal the win for Emerson. Rice was credited with his first win of the season.

Both teams' next matchups are away games at noon against non-conference opponents on April 15th. Emerson takes on Suffolk University, while Springfield faces off against Amherst College.
