Baseball Defeated by MIT, 4-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Emerson baseball took the short trip to Cambridge on Tuesday afternoon to face NEWMAC rivals MIT. Both teams saw solid outings at the plate and on the mound, but the Engineers defeated the Lions and swept the season series, 4-2.

Emerson falls to 5-24 (2-12 NEWMAC) this season, while MIT improves to 15-17 (5-9 NEWMAC).

GAME SUMMARY
Shane Moriarty was tabbed for his third start of the season on the mound for Emerson. MIT opted to open the game with Karl Meyer.

Both sides were shut out through the first four innings. Meyer was relieved by Ben Burke in the top of the fourth, having given up two hits and striking out two in three innings of work. Moriarty pitched into the bottom of the fifth, but a leadoff single followed by a hit batter led to his replacement on the mound by Angelo Deer. The Engineers broke the scoreless tie after the change by scoring on a passed ball strikeout. A single by Tyler Godfrey in the next at-bat drove in one more and gave MIT a 2-0 lead.

The Engineers extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth after a two-out infield error allowed a runner to score from second base. Emerson put their first run of the game on the board in the top of the seventh after a double by Robby Posio drove in Blake Benway. Posio would later tally a run himself after scoring on a passed ball, cutting MIT's lead down to 3-2. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when Jake Sonandres gave the Engineers some insurance with an RBI double down the left-field line to make the score 4-2. Reed Tubbs came in to pitch for MIT in the top of the ninth and shut down the Lions, earning a save and claiming the win for the home team.

Moriarty gave up three hits in his day on the mound but was tabbed with the first MIT run to score in the bottom of the fifth. Deer was given the loss after finishing the game for the Lions, giving up three runs and six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Burke was credited with the win giving up no runs and three hits while striking out three and walking one over three innings. MIT used five pitchers in total during the matchup, as Chase Rubin and Jimmy Moore pitched the seventh and eighth.

Chris Ferara had the most success out of Emerson's lineup, going 3-4 on the day. Benway and Posio had two-hit days while Nicholas Favazzo and Ryan Herskowitz both recorded one, with Herskowitz's being a double in the top of the third. Godfrey and Teddy Shoenfeld had the best days for MIT, as both players recorded two hits each.
