Baseball Uses Big Inning and Stellar Pitching to Push Past Gordon, 8-2

Wenham, Mass. - Emerson baseball faced off against the Fighting Scots of Gordon College on Thursday afternoon. The Lions scored five runs in the sixth inning en route to an eight-run performance. Chris Lowe held the hosts at bay, giving up five hits and striking out ten while going the distance.

Emerson improves to 6-24 after the win, while Gordon falls to 7-30.

GAME SUMMARY
Lowe was given the ball for his eighth start on the mound this season. Gordon went with Jason Bellefeuille, who would be the first of nine pitchers sent out by the Fighting Scots in the game.

Gordon took an early lead after Alex Razzaboni drove one in with a two-out single in the bottom of the first. Emerson wouldn't strike back until the top of the fourth when Blake Benway drove in Briggs Loveland with a sac fly to right field.

The score remained tied at one until the top of the sixth. The Lions added one after Avery Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Another scored in the next at-bat, as a ground ball to second base by Caleb Cheyney was misplayed. Jake Okamoto drove one in with an infield single, and Smith scored after Nicholas Favazzo was hit by a pitch. Cheyney later scored on a wild pitch. Emerson had taken a 6-1 lead by the third out.

The Lions extended their lead to 7-1 in the top of the eighth after back-to-back doubles by Favazzo and Loveland, with Loveland's bringing Favazzo around. Emerson made it 8-1 in the top of the ninth after Okamoto a one-out sac fly by Okamoto with the bases loaded allowed Benway to tag up and score. Gordon took a run back with one out in the bottom half on a double by David Melendez, but Lowe struck out the next two batters to claim the victory and his second win of the season.

Brett Moore was tabbed with the loss. Gordon's most successful pitcher was Tyler Sprince, who struck out three and walked one while pitching the top of the seventh. All five of the Fighting Scots' hits were tallied by different players, with Andrew Hartman joining Melendez in the doubles column by hitting one in the bottom of the first to set up Gordon's first run of the game.

Emerson saw a trio of two-hit performances by Loveland, Braeden O'Connell, and Ryan Herskowitz, who accounted for six of Emerson's eight hits. Okamoto and Favazzo recorded the other two. The Lions were hit by pitches on seven instances throughout the afternoon, with Smith and Chris Ferara taking the brunt after being beaned two times each.
