Men’s Basketball Topped by Nationally-Ranked Tufts in Home-Opener

BOSTON, Mass.- Playing on its home court for the first time this season, the Emerson College men's basketball team suffered an 80-57 setback to nationally-ranked Tufts Sunday afternoon at the Bobbi Brown & Steven Plofker Gym. The Jumbos opened the year ranked No. 13 in the D3Hoops.com National Preseason Poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After falling behind 22-8 in the first half, Emerson clawed back to seize a 29-28 edge with 4:26 on the clock as Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) banked in a layup.
  • The Lions extended their lead to 36-32 with nine seconds remaining in the opening frame as Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) drilled a straight-away three-pointer.
  • Tufts trimmed the gap to 36-34 just before the halftime break on a pair of free throws by Jon Medley.
  • The visitors scored 46 points in the second stanza while limiting the home team to 21 points as en route to earning their second victory of the year.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) poured in a season-high 19 points to go with eight boards and three blocks off the bench.
  • Jacob Armant (Arlington, Texas) notched 11 points and Lucas Brenner (Miami, Fla.) chipped in with eight points.
  • Emerson finished with a field-goal percentage of 36.4% while draining 5-of-24 from beyond the arc.
  • Tufts shot 50.8% from the floor and just 20% from three-point territory on the afternoon.
  • Scott Gyimesi paced the Jumbos with a game-high 23 points and hauled in 11 boards while Joshua Bernstein tallied 15 points.
