The Lead: The Emerson softball team traveled to UMASS Boston on Monday afternoon for a non-conference bout against the Beacons. The Lions lost both games by one run at UMB Softball Field.
GAME ONE:

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions struck early and first in the top of the first inning. With 2 outs in the innings, Mackenzie Killough drew a walk before cleanup hitter, Claire Overton doubled to left field, plating the first run of the game and giving Emerson a 1-0 lead.
- Jessica Gomez was able to keep the Beacons offense at bay for 4 innings as she did not allow a hit.
- UMASS Boston was able to get on the board and record their first hit with one swing of the bat. With 2 outs in the home half of the 4th inning, Lauryn Bethea connected on a pitch and drove it over the right field fence, tying the game at 1-1.
- In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Beacons were able to secure the go-ahead and ultimately the winning run on a throwing error by the Lions.
- The Beacons hurler, Bri Melchionda only surrendered 3 hits and one run over 7 innings pitched and striking out 14 Lions.
- The Lions dropped game one of the doubleheader by a score of 2-1 at UMB Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson again started the scoring in the top of the first in game two on Monday afternoon. Sam Zannotti led off the game with a double to center field as the Lions proceeded to load the bases. Gomez was able to drive in a run with a sacrifice fly before Ally Lacey delivered a 2 RBI single to right field, giving Emerson a 3-0 lead before UMASS even touched their bats.
- The Lions added one more run in the top of the 4th inning to extend their lead to 4-0.
- The Lions starter, Grace Beaulieu kept the Beacons bats silent until the bottom of the 4th inning. The first hit Beaulieu would surrender came in the 4th inning. Sydney Sanden led off the inning with a double before Amauri English followed up with another double to get UMASS on the scoreboard. After 4 complete innings, Emerson led the beacons 4-1.
- UMASS battled all the way back in the home half of the 5th inning as they scored 3 runs on 3 hits and capitalized on an Emerson error. After 5 complete innings, the score was tied 5-5.
- The Lions bats went down in order in the top of the 6th inning as UMASS was able to manufacture the game winning run in the home half of the inning.
- The Lions loaded the bases in the top of the 7th inning but Emily Doble was able to escape the jam without surrendering a run and securing the doubleheader sweep for UMASS.

The Lions return to NEWMAC action on Friday, April 7th as they play host to MIT. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3pm.
