The Lead: The Emerson volleyball team took the split in their second to last tri-match of the 2023 season against GNAC foes, Wentworth and Colby-Sawyer, on Saturday afternoon. Emerson fell to Wentworth in straight sets to start off the day. Then in the second match, the Lions topped Colby-Sawyer, 3-0.
Prior to the second match of today's tri-match, Emerson head coach Ben Read honored the class of 2023, which consisted of Jerick Lou and Neiko Pittman.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
- Emerson jumped out to the 3-0 lead on a trio of kills from freshman Ben Dorsey, sophomore Jack Miessner and Roehm. Holding the slight 4-1 advantage over Wentworth, the Leopards answered with an 8-1 spurt that pushed the visitors in front, 9-5.
- The Lions stayed within four of Wentworth before a 6-3 run pushed the Leopards up to the seven-point lead at 20-13 when a swing from LaBouliere capped off the run.
- Down seven 21-14, Emerson powered out a 6-2 spurt that cut Wentworth's lead down to three at 23-20. with the help of three kills, an ace and two Leopards attack miscues.
- Wentworth cut Emerson's comeback short with the set's final two points on a kill and ace at the line as the Lions fell, 25-20.
SET TWO
- Wentworth commanded the opening of the second frame with a 13-2 lead before Emerson closed the gap to five at 14-9 on a 7-1 scoring tear that consisted of three Leopards errors.
- Five is the closest Emerson would come to Wentworth as the visitor built their lead up to eight at 22-13 behind three consecutive kills.
- The Lions registered their final three points of the set on two attack miscues and a kill from Roehm before an error on the hosts and a kill from Moughon put the Lions down 2-0.
SET THREE
- It was a competitive start to the third as Emerson trailed by only two points at 9-7 before they fell to a double-digit deficit at 21-11 after Wentworth posted a 12-4 streak in the deep portion of the frame.
- Emerson got themselves back in the set and fended off another double-digit deficit at 23-16 with the help of a 5-2 run and pulled within seven on Roehm's swing.
- An attack error by Moughon put Emerson back within seven at 24-17, but Jacob Waga closed the third with a kill as Emerson to the Leopards, 3-0.

SET ONE
- Emerson held Colby-Sawyer to a -.095 hit percentage in the opening set and posted the 25-11 first set win.
- The Lions commanded the first frame with a 9-1 before they used the next seven of ten points to bump their advantage into double-figures at 16-4.
- With the score sat 20-6 after a quick four-point spurt, Colby Sawyer tacked three straight points to pull within 11 at 20-9. Emerson followed up with the set's last five of seven points to take the 25-11 win.
SET TWO
- Colby Sawyer came out of the second with 11-5 lead early on before Emerson battled back with a 7-1 run and locked the score at 12-all behind a swing from Slavik.
- Emerson fell behind by two at 14-12 on a Davies kill and attack miscue, but regrouped and were able to keep Colby Sawyer behind despite the Chargers locking the score two times down the stretch.
- The Lions fended off the Chargers after they registered their 22nd point on Davies' kill and saw Lou send down the set-winning pair of kills to take the set, 25-22.
SET THREE
- Much like the first set, Emerson held Colby Sawyer to a negative hit percentage, this time at -.222 to run away with the 25-14 third frame win.
- After Emerson held a lead of three at 6-3 to start of the third, the Lions went on a scoring tear and pieced together a 17-5 run to bump the score to a 23-8 cushion.
- With the 23-8 lead, Colby Sawyer would not go away quietly as they registered the next six of seven points to close the gap to 10 at 24-14.
- Lou locked down the 25-14 victory with a kill as Emerson took down Colby Sawyer in three sets.
