The Lead: In their final tri-match before break, the Emerson men's volleyball team came away with the split in matches against Sage and Nichols on Saturday afternoon. In the first match, Emerson earned the three-set sweep over Sage. Then in the closing match, Emerson fell to Nichols, 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
- A tight margin of no more than four points between Emerson and Sage occurred in the opening portion of the first set.
- With the score sat at 9-7, Emerson broke away on an an 8-3 run to pull ahead by seven at 17-10 after sophomore Jack Miessner capped off the run with a kill.
- Emerson maintained their lead of at least six up until the closing of the first when with the score at 24-17, Sage capitalized on three Lions miscues to inch within four at 24-20.
- Sage served an error at the line, which allowed Emerson to come away with the first set win, 25-20.
SET TWO
- Out the gate of the second, Emerson fired off a 10-2 spurt after Pittman sent down a kill to give the Lions an eight-point edge over Sage.
- After an attack error by Emerson broke up the scoring run, the Purple & White got back on track and used three errors by Sage to push their lead into double figures at 13-3.
- Emerson was able to keep Sage trailing by double-digits for the remainder of the frame and rolled to the 25-10 win.
SET THREE
- Four ties and five lead changes occurred after Emerson surrendered its early edge.
- With the score locked at 14-all after an Emerson serving error, the Lions tacked on five consecutive points to gain the five-point lead at 19-14.
- Emerson fended off Sage's attempts to forge a comeback and built their lead up to seven after a quick 3-0 run deep into the frame moved the score to 24-17.
- Sage registered their last point on an attack error by the Lions, but it was Emerson who sealed the 25-18 on a kill from De Los Santos.

SET ONE
- Nichols overwhelmed Emerson within the opening set as the Lions were held to a hit percentage of -.091.
- The start of the first had Nichols build a five-point lead that quickly turned into a 10-point advantage after putting together a 6-0 scoring run with the score at 16-6.
- Emerson earned two consecutive points back on a pair of miscues by the Bison, but the hosts responded with the set's final seven of eight points to take the first set, 25-9.
SET TWO
- Emerson led from the get go in the second frame and snagged the 10-4 advantage over Nichols. The Lions' early scoring spark consisted of five kills.
- The Lions built on to their four-point advantage and increased it to seven on a swing from Miessner that moved the score to 15-8.
- In the middle portion of the frame, Emerson maintained their six-point lead at 16-10 before Nichols used a 7-2 spurt to cut the visitor's once lengthy advantage down to one at 18-17.
- Nichols stayed within two for the remainder of the frame, yet Emerson was able to hold on and come away with the 25-20 win to level the match at 1-1.
SET THREE
- Nichols opened the third frame with a 6-1 advantage, but saw that dwindle as Emerson answered with the next five of seven points to close within two at 8-6.
- After Emerson inched within two of Nichols, the Bison created distance and extended their margin into double-figures on a 14-4 run.
- Emerson tallied one more point on De Los Santos' kill with the score at 22-11, but Nichols ripped off the next three points to take the third set, 25-11.
SET FOUR
- It was a competitive start to the fourth with the margin never going over two points. Emerson broke 9-9 tie and went ahead 12-10 only to have Nichols lock up the score four times, the last time at 15-all.
- Emerson evened the score one last time at 16-all on a serving mishap by Nichols and would stay within one on two more occasions.
- Down one at 19-18, Nichols tallied a 3-0 run to put Emerson in a three-point deficit at 22-18.
- Emerson tacked on their final two points on a pair of Nichols serving errors, but the Bison tallied the three set-winning points on a trio of kills as the Lions fell, 25-20.

- Emerson takes a short hiatus for spring break and get back to conference action on Thursday, March 23rd when they host Dean at 6:00 p.m.
