Men's Volleyball Falls to MIT and Nichols

The Lead: The Emerson Men's Volleyball team hosted their first tri-match of the year on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed in cross-town rival MIT and Nichols College. The Lions dropped the opening match to MIT by a score of 3-0 before suffering the same result to Nichols in the afternoon matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Emerson battled throughout the first set of the day as they traded points with the Engineers for the majority of the frame. MIT led by no more than 5 points until the final point of the set when a kill by Ben Sheres gave the Engineers a 25-19 set victory.
  • The Lions continued to stay tough into the second set. Led by Luke Roehm and Neiko Pittman, a late three-point rally brought the Lions within three points with a score of 22-19. MIT would score 3 of the final 4 points scored in the set to take a 2-0 match lead over the Lions.
  • MIT carried the momentum from the previous two sets into the final set. The Engineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Another late, three-point run by the Lions helped bring them within two points, but the Engineers again pulled away and won the set by a score of 25-19 and wrapped up the 3-0 sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Nichol's offensive attack was lights out in the first two sets. Committing only four total errors on 48 total attempts through the first two sets. The Bison racked up 32 kills throughout the first two sets as well.
  • Nichols took the first two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-14 over the Lions.
  • Down two sets to zero, the Lions battled throughout the third set. With the Bison ahead by a score of 20-9, the Lions rattled off 7 consecutive points.
  • Emerson cut the lead to four points, but Nichols' offensive attack proved to be too much as they were still able to pull away late in the third set and win by a score of 25-19.

 

 

UP NEXT 

The Lions head to New Hampshire on Tuesday, February 7th to take on Rivier.
