Weekly Preview: Men's Basketball Looks To End Regular Season With A Bang

BOSTON, Mass. -  We have reached the final week of the Emerson men's basketball regular season with the Lions entering its last two games in fourth place in the NEWMAC. After a 1-1 week, the Lions prepare for its final home slate hosting Babson on Wednesday night and end the 2019-2020 campaign down at Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon. 


A LOOK BACK 

  • In its two NEWMAC clashes against Central Mass. schools, Clark and WPI, Emerson picked up the 1-1 split with its overall record sitting at 14-9 and 7-5 against conference opponents. 
  • Emerson started the week off with a bang when it hosted Clark on Wednesday night and picked up a 103-70 victory in a game that had six Lions notch double-figures in points, paced by 19 points from sophomore Jarred Houston (Norwood, Mass.) and a 10 assist night for senior Jack O'Connor (Newport, R.I.). 
  • The Lions took a trip out to WPI on Saturday where the Purple & Gold fell in a season series sweep, 85-64, to the Engineers. 


POSTSEASON PUSH

  • With two regular season slates remaining on the 2019-2020 schedule, Emerson currently enters its final week at number four behind Springfield, WPI and Babson.


O'CONNOR DUBBED LION OF THE WEEK 

  • In another stat heavy week for O'Connor, the senior has been named Lion of the Week for the second time this season for competition ranging from February 10 to 17. 
  • O'Connor converted 12-of-22 from the field (54.5%) alongside 84.6% (11-of-13) at the charity stripe for a total of 37 points through two games. 
  • Alongside his 37 points, O'Connor filled his stat line with 13 rebounds, 11 assists, two steals and one block. 
  • In Emerson's win over Clark last Wednesday, O'Connor dished out a season-high 10 assists to go along with 16 points. 


HOME SWEET HOME

  • After picking up a 103-70 triumph over Clark last Wednesday night, the men have posted an 8-3 record down at Brown & Plofker. 
  • Since the start of the 2020 portion of their schedule, Emerson has won its last five of six home contests with its lone loss coming against WPI back on January 22


PACING ON THE PERIMETER

  • Freshman James Beckwith (Palo Alto, Calif.) stands strong at the top of the three-point percentage leaderboard and holds a perimeter percentage of 47.8% just ahead of WPI's Jake Needleman (47.3%)
  • Beckwith remains the only freshman to rank within the top-10 of NEWMAC three-point shooters.


TEAM EFFORT 

  • As a whole, the Lions rank second amongst NEWMAC teams in field goal percentage, converting 38.0% of its shots and sit behind Springfield (39.4%). 
  • The Purple & Gold have dished out a conference-best 17.0 assists per game all while protecting the glass with a NEWMAC-best 4.3 blocks per game. 


SENIOR FAREWELL

  • Emerson bids farewell to its pair of seniors, Ben Holding and O'Connor, come Wednesday night as the pair enter their final home game down at Brown and will be honored before tip-off.
