The Lead: A Maddie Tomich single in the top of the ninth inning gave the Emerson Lions Softball team their first ever trip to the NEWMAC playoffs after taking a split from the Wheaton Lyons in NEWMAC play.
GAME ONE (Wheaton 4, Emerson 3)
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Both teams mustered nine hits over the seven innings but Emerson fell one run short.
- Maddie Tomich (Lithia, Fla.) and Jacqueline DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I.) each had two hits for the Lions.
- Neely Eddleston (West Wareham, Mass.) took the loss while allowing four runs over seven innings pitched.
- Allison Cox got the victory for Wheaton, her tenth of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) knocked in the first run of the game on a single to left field in the top of the first inning which brought home Lindsey Lowe.
- Wheaton used one big inning to get all their runs. In the bottom of the second, the team scored four runs highlighted by a Chloe Woodward single in the middle of the inning which made the score 2-1.
- Emerson grabbed two runs back in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to overcome the three run deficit.
- The Lions fell with a final score of 4-3.
GAME TWO (Emerson 4, Wheaton 3)
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson fell behindin the bottom of the first inning, with one run coming across the plate for Wheaton.
- In the top of the seoncd, the Lions jumped right back on top with a two run fly out by Alena Jones which gave the Lions a 2-1 lead.
- Wheaton grabbed one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the game went to extra innings with the score knotted at two.
- A Lindsey Lowe sacrifice fly gave Emerson a 3 -2 lead in the top of the eighth, which WHeaton cancelled out in the bottom of the frame to keep the score 3-3 heading into the ninth inning.
- Maddie Tomich's single brought home Kallista Leonardos and Neely Eddleston closed out the game in the vottom of the inning, giving the Lions a 4-3 victory and sending them to the playoffs!

- Emerson will play a tune-up double header against Simmons on Friday, April 27th before their first playoff game on Wednesday, May 2nd.
