The Lead: Juniors Mark Piorkowski (Montclair, N.J.) produced 14 kills and Win Kittivatcharapong (Bangkok, Thailand) contributed 10 as the Lions took the down the Newbury Nighthawks in a 3-0 sweep on Thursday night in non-conference men's volleyball action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Piorkowski hit .600 on the night with a match-high 14 kills as Kittivatcharapong added 10 swings on 14 attempts with one error for a match-best .643 and served two aces.
- Freshman Marcus Cepeda (Sacramento, Calif.) finished with a career-best 36 helpers while sophomore Carl D'Aguiar (Tujunga, Calif.) recorded 11 digs and freshman Samuel Willinger (Golden Beach, Fla.) led the Lions defense with three blocks.
- Leading Newbury was Trevor Throne with 10 kills and hit .304, while Rory Dobbins added six kills and Jeremias Sotot had 22 assists.
- Emerson finished the win with a .438 hitting percentage and averaged 4.0 blocks with 31 digs and two aces.
- Newbury concluded the match hitting .060 with 3.0 blocks, 20 digs and a pair of aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
- To start off the opening frame, Emerson grabbed the 9-3 lead and were able to capitalize on Nighthawks errors.
- The Lions never let up their lead and finished the set with 16 kills on 30 attempts with three errors, hitting their way to a 25-15 win in the first.
SET TWO
- Emerson once again started out in front, scoring seven of the first 10 points to take the 7-3 lead.
- Newbury responded with the next three points, but the Lions answered with five straight, including a pair of swings from Piorkowski, to extend Emerson's lead to 15-7.
- Much like the first frame, Emerson hit for an impressive .478 and took the set by the score of 25-15.
SET THREE
- Newbury and Emerson battled for the lead early on with the score at 9-9, but control favored the Lions and tallied five consecutive points to propel to a 15-9 lead.
- Emerson pieced together another lengthy run, this time an 8-2 spurt, and put the frame out of reach with the score at 23-14.
- A Piorkowski kill and Nighthawks error ultimately led to the Lions grabbing the sweep by the score of 25-15, once again.
