The Lead: Junior Mark Piorkowski and Senior Captain Nick Rusk led the Lions over the bulldogs and an exciting three set match, 3-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Mark Piorkowski (Montclair, N.J.) and Nick Rusk (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) each had nine kills to lead the Lions.
- Senior Captain Nick Rusk totaled nine kills, four service aces, four digs, and three assists for the Lions.
- Freshmen setters Marcus Cepeda (Sacramento, Cali.) and Lucas Raagas (Cambridge, Mass.) led the Lions in assists, with 13 and 12 respectively.
- On the defensive end, Carl D'Aguiar (Tujunga, CA) totaled 12 digs, helping Emerson transition to attack.
- Diondre Gomes led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and nine digs, team highs in both categories.
- Bobby Terreault passed all around the court, totaling 22 assists in three sets for the Bulldogs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (Emerson 25, Dean 20)
- The Lions jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after falling behind 1-0.
- The Bulldogs stormed back, eventually taking the lead from the Lions at 15-14.
- Two kills by Diego Garcia (Honolulu, HI) started a run for the Lions, regaining the lead and extending it to 20-15.
- The teams traded points until Emerson took the final point on a kill by Mark Piorkowski, ending the set at 25-20.
SET TWO (Emerson 25, Dean 20)
- After falling behind 2-1, the Lions traded pointed with e Bulldogs until Emerson was able to take a hold of the lead at 12-8.
- Emerson extended its lead to seven at 18-12 and never allowed the Bulldogs back into the set.
- Nick Rusk tallied one of his four service aces to bring Emerson within on point of ending the set at 24-19.
- After a point by the Bulldogs, Emerson's Mark Piorkowski had another set ending kill to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
SET THREE (Emerson 25, Dean 23)
- In the most highly contested set of the day, the Lions jumped out to a 4-2 lead.
- The Bulldogs and Lions continued to battle, eventually becoming knotted at 9-9 and 13-13.
- A quick run gave the Lions a four point lead at 17-13.
- The Bulldogs fought back, giving the Lions a one point lead at 20-19.
- The Lions held off the Bulldogs, ending the match with a kill by Freshman Samuel Willinger (Golden Beach, Fla,).
