The Lead: The Emerson men's volleyball team could not slow down the No. 8 Lasell Lasers on Thursday night as the Lions fell in straight sets to help extend the Lasers undefeated record in conference play at Brown & Plofker Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
- Emerson knotted the score four times within the first set and broke a 16-all tie to go ahead 18-17 on a kill by sophomore Mark Piorkowski (Montclair, N.J.).
- Lasell tied the score for the last time at 18-all and strung together seven of the last nine points to grab the 25-20 win on a swing by Patrick MacDonald.
SET TWO
- After Lasell jumped out to the 9-3 lead to start off the second set, they never looked back.
- Emerson was able to close within five of Lasell at 9-4 on a service error before Lasell went on a 4-0 push to go ahead 13-4.
- The Lions got five more points back to put the score at 17-9 before the Lasers extended its lead into double digits at 19-9 after an attack error.
- A service error tacked on the 10th and final Emerson point as Lasell put up the final six points to take the 25-10 win.
SET THREE
- Emerson held the 6-5 lead until Lasell countered for the next seven points to pull in front, 12-6, on an attack error.
- The Lions registered the next four of seven points to cut the deficit to five at 15-10 before the Lasers pulled out the next eight of nine points to balloon their lead to 23-11.
- Through the end of the third set, Emerson was able to tack on three more points, including kills from Diego Garcia (Honolulu, Hi.) and Piorkowski, brought the score to 24-14.
- Lasell closed out the 25-14 win with a kill by MacDonald.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Piorkowski's eight kills led the Emerson offense, junior Nick Rusk (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.) had 13 assists and freshman Carl D'Aguiar (Tujunga, Calif.) recorded eight digs.
- Freshman Brendan Lynch (Dayton, Ohio) served one ace and junior Stig Regan (Kailua, Hi.) led the Lions defense with three block assists.
- Tristan Davis and Jeffrey Vautrin each recorded 10 swings for Lasell, Andy Henriquez had a match-high 30 assists, MacDonald served one ace and Jordan Aprea registered eight digs.
- MacDonald led the defense with six block assists.
UP NEXT
- Emerson heads to Emmanuel on Saturday, April 1 for GNAC tri-match against Emmanuel and Mount Ida starting at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
- Lasell will also be in conference tri-match play on Saturday in New Haven, Conn. to take on Wentworth and Albertus Magnus at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
