The Lead: Led by a match-best 17 kills from sophomore Win Kittivatcharapong (Bangkok, Thailand), and game-high 30 assists and 13 digs from junior Nick Rusk (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.), the Emerson men's volleyball locked up its third consecutive GNAC triumph in straight sets over the Emmanuel (Mass.) Saints on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
- After Emmanuel grabbed an early 4-3 lead over Emerson to begin the first frame on a kill by Paul Bleau, the Lions tallied a trio of points to notch the 6-4 edge before a Lions error squared the score, 7-all.
- Emerson and Emmanuel remained within three points of one another until the Lions embarked on a 10-2 push in the midst of the set to pull them ahead, 17-9.
- To close out the first frame, Emerson never looked back and cruised to a 25-16 set win.
SET TWO
- Both Emerson and Emmanuel exchanged the lead to open the second set until the score was squared at 10-all.
- The Saints distanced themselves by three points at 13-10 before the Lions countered the next five consecutive points that consisted of two kills from Kittivatcharapong to put them up, 15-13.
- Emmanuel kept with steady pace of Emerson to wrap up the second frame before the Lions went two sets on a tight 25-20 win.
SET THREE
- Each team traded off points early within the third stanza as Emmanuel opened the set to a four point lead at 10-6, their largest lead margin, on a kill from Alex Silva.
- Emerson began to close the gap and pieced together a trio of points and followed up with a 5-0 push to override the Saints lead.
- A late kill from Manuel Velez put the Saints within a point at 22-21 as the Lions finished off the sweep with three points from sophomore Mark Piorkowski (Montclair, N.J.), including a pair of aces, to lock up the 25-21 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Kittivatcharapong recorded 17 kills on 34 swings and Rusk had 30 assists and 13 digs.
- Piorkowski served two aces and junior Stig Regan (Kailua, Hi.) led the defense with three block assists.
- Max Gottuso led the Saints on both sides and recorded 10 digs to match seven kills, while Silva also recorded seven kills.
- Seamus McDonough countered for 20 assists and three blocks and Elijah Parks registered nine digs.
