The Lead: In non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon, the Emerson softball team suffered an 11-2 five inning setback to the visiting Johnson & Wales Wildcats at Rotch Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) punched an RBI single into the right center gap to give Emerson the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
- In top of the third, Johnson & Wales made their way onto the board and pulled in front 2-1 on Emily Gorecki's two-run triple into right.
- Kristin Frost doubled in an insurance run for the Wildcats to put the score at 3-1 before a grounder to the shortstop and aBrenna DuPerry's RBI single pushed the lead to 5-1.
- Johnson & Wales used their half of the fifth frame to plate six runs and balloon its lead to 11-1.
- After Ally Mishol drove in Gorecki on a grounder to short, the Wildcats capitalized on an error by the pitcher that was followed by a three-run RBI double into right from Diana Amendolara.
- Leonardos hammered a double into deep right center to drive in Emerson's second run before Frost fanned the final Lions batter.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Leonardos paced Emerson in the batter's box with a single, double and two RBIs.
- Gorecki finished 3-for-3 at the plate for Johnson & Wales with a triple, two RBI and one run scored, while Amendolara had three RBIs.
- DuPerry, Meghan Gavin, Forst and Alex Fantasia plated two runs apiece.
- Emily Gundrum (1-0) pitched four innings in the win for Johnson & Wales as she surrendered one run one four hits with one walk and fanned a pair of batters, while Frost pitched one relief inning and gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
- On the mound for Emerson was freshman Keely Marquez (La Verne, Calif.) who was tagged with the loss as she allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits with one strikeout through four innings.
- Freshman Marisa DeFranco (Falls Church, Va.) and sophomore Kodie Cash (Big Bear City, Calif.) pitched a combined .3 relief innings and gave up six runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk.
- Johnson & Wales outhit Emerson, 13-6, as the Lions stranded six runners on the bags and the Wildcats left five on the bases.
