The Lead: The Emerson men's volleyball team got back to its winning ways in Saturday afternoon non conference action as the Lions took down the Dean College Bulldogs in straight sets in a 3-0 victory at Pieri Gym.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Mark Piorkowski (Montclair, N.J.) paced Emerson with a team-best six kills and six aces to match three digs, while classmate Win Kittivatcharapong (Bangkok, Thailand) followed with five kills and four aces.
- Junior Nick Rusk (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded a match-high 10 assists.
- Freshman Diego Garcia (Honolulu, Hi.) registered 10 digs, while both freshman John Bucy (McLean, Va.) and junior Stig Regan (Kailua, Hi.) led the defense with one solo block each.
- Moussa Seck recorded a team-high two kills for Dean as Gabriel McCain recorded four aces and Pepe Vieria had eight digs.
- Seck, McCain and Logan Muise each recorded one block apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
- Early within the opening frame, Emerson quickly jumped out to the 12-4 advantage and never trailed through the entirety of the match.
- A swing from Piorkowski put the Lions in front at 18-6 before they rolled to a 25-9 first set win.
SET TWO
- Emerson opened the second set with a four point lead over Dean before the Bulldogs began to slowly close in on the Lions.
- The Lions went on to tack on a streak of six consecutive points to grab the 13-4 lead as the Bulldogs answered with the next two of three points.
- After Dean started to cut into Emerson's lead, the Lions answered with an 11-5 push to close out the 25-11 second frame win.
SET THREE
- A kill from Kittivatcharpong capped off Emerson's lengthy 13-2 advantage over Dean to begin the final frame and maintained a double-digit lead until midway through the set.
- With the Lions ahead 15-4, the Bulldogs responded with the next six points to cut the Lions lead to seven at 17-10.
- Emerson once again began to pull away and put up three more points to give them an eight-point cushion at 20-12 on a Kittivatcharapong kill.
- Dean was able to add one more point before Emerson added five points on the board to cruise to the 25-13 win on a pair of aces by Kittivatcharapong.
UP NEXT
- Emerson steps back into GNAC action on Tuesday, February 28 as the Lions welcome Wentworth for a 7:00 p.m. conference tilt.
- Dean will take on Emerson once again next Thursday, March 2 as the Lions host the Bulldogs for a 7:00 p.m. match.
