The Lead: On Tuesday night in the Emerson men's volleyball team's second meeting with MIT, the Lions were swept in straight sets by the host Engineers in non-conference action at Rockwell Cage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Win Kittivatcharapong (Bangkok, Thailand) finished with a team-best four kills and co-led the Lions defense with junior Stig Regan (Kailua, Hi.) with a pair of blocks.
- Junior Nick Rusk (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied 11 assists, while freshman Diego Garcia (Honolulu, Hi.) registered one ace and classmate Carl D'Aguiar (Tujunga, Calif.) had a team-high eight digs.
- Thomas Nelson paced MIT with match-high 10 kills on 14 swings to match four aces and 10 digs, while Yize Dong racked up 27 assists and Skyler Kaufman registered three solo blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The closest Emerson would come within MIT in the first set would be one at 2-2 before the Engineers gained the 6-2 lead on a 4-0 streak.
- The Engineers pushed their advantage into double digits at 10 to put the score at 19-9 on a Martin Krasuski kill.
- Kittivatcharapong tallied Emerson's final point of the set with a kill as MIT went on to register the last six points to cruise to the 25-11 opening frame win.
- Emerson and MIT were in a deadlock 5-all tie to begin the second stanza until a kill from Nelson ignited a 4-0 streak by the Engineers to break the tie and put the score at 9-5.
- The Lions kept a steady pace with the Engineers and trailed by no more than a four-point margin at 19-15, however, the Engineers went on to tally the next five of seven points to grab the 25-17 second set win.
- To begin the third frame, Emerson held its first lead over MIT at 4-3, but could not hold off the Engineers as they answered with the next seven points to grab the 10-4 edge.
- MIT ballooned their lead to eight at 20-12 on a streak of five points yet Emerson clawed their way back into the match with a 12-4 run and erased the Engineers dominant lead to square the score at 24-all.
- The Lions once again squared the match, this time at 27-all, before the Engineers capped off the 29-27 third set win on a Kaufman kill and Lions attack error.
