Women's Volleyball Sweeps Suffolk In Straight Sets

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - After falling to NEWMAC foe Wellesley on Tuesday night, the Emerson women's volleyball squad rebounded and grabbed a 3-0 non-conference sweep over Suffolk on Thursday night at Regan Gymnasium.

Emerson improves to 8-3, while Suffolk falls to 3-3.

The Lions had a match-high .333 kill percentage that helped the Purple & Yellow cruise to a 25-9 first set win, while the Rams struggled and hit for a -.333. Five was the closest that Suffolk was able to come within Emerson at 8-3, but it was after that where the Lions took control over the set and never looked back. Despite a late kill from junior Jane Buckley (Plaistow, N.H.) to put the Rams within 12 at 21-9, it was too late. The Lions notched five consecutive points, including two kills from seniors Annie Hall (Okemos, Mich.) and Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y.) to close out the set.

Suffolk rebounded from a tough first set defeat and took the 3-1 lead to begin the second set, but their lead did not last for Emerson took the 5-3 lead on three straight aces from freshman Kayleen Bertrand (New Boston, N.H.). The Lions pushed the lead to eight before the Rams got the score within four on a kill from Buckley at 15-11, but a 10-3 run from the Purple & Yellow secured the 25-14 second set victory.

Though neither team put up high kill percentages, Emerson at .176 and Suffolk at -.067, the third set was more evenly matched for the score saw three ties, yet Emerson never sacrificed the lead. After Suffolk tied the match 5-all on a kill from freshman Alyssa Gibson (Taunton, Mass.), Emerson went on a 5-1 run to gain the 10-6 edge. The Rams were not going away quietly for they answered the Lions' run with its own 5-1 run to square the set at 11-11. Emerson regained rhythm put some distance between them and Suffolk to give themselves an five point cushion at 20-15. 16 points were all the Rams would record with a combined three kills from sophomore Kelley Guerra (Randolph, N.J.) and Hall to lock the 25-16 win in the third set and 3-0 sweep.

Freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.) led the Purple & Yellow with seven kills, along with nine digs and three blocks. Augustine and Guerra each recorded six kills with a combined six blocks, while sophomore Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) registered 12 digs and sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) had 23 helpers. Bertranded registered four aces.

Buckley led Suffolk with five kills, while sophomore Bridget Allison (Westford, Mass.) followed with four kills and a trio of players each recorded two kills. Sophomore Emma Feeney (Monroe, Conn.) registered 11 digs.

Both Emerson and Suffolk return to the court on Saturday. The Lions return to NEWMAC play and will host Mount Holyoke at 1:00 p.m., while the Rams host a tri-match and will face Daniel Webster and Pine Manor at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
