Box Score 2 Boston, Mass.- The Emerson Lions faced a double header against the visiting WPI Engineers, falling short in both games with scores of 10-7 in game 1, and 12-1 in 5 innings for game 2.
Samantha Corey pitched a complete game in the first game giving up 12 hits, 6 earned runs, and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. The unearned runs came from errors by Alena Jones, Jillian Gearin, and Molly Goldstein (2).
The Engineers used 4 pitchers in the first game. Caroline Medino received the start and pitched 1.1 innings with 2 hits and 1 earned run, however the Lions had scored 5 runs while she was pithing. Casey Arpin got the win as she pitched 4 innings giving up 2 hits and no runs. Kelsey Saucier came into the game in the 7th inning giving up 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Clare Doolin received the save pitching .2 innings with no hits or runs allowed.
WPI scored early in the game with two homeruns. Lindsay Gurska's was a 3 run homerun while Caraline Wood had a solo shot. In the 2nd inning the Engineers scored 4 runs off a Nina Murphy-Cook single, a Kristin Gallagher groundout to first, and a 2 run homerun by Gurska. WPI would not score again until the 6th inning off a homerun by Ama Biney and they would score one more in the 7th off a Saucier single.
The Lions came out scoring in the 1st inning off a groundout to second base by Kallista Leonardoes scoring Jones. Four more runs following in the 2nd inning through a walk by Shelby Carney with bases loaded and Jones getting hit by a pitch during the next at bat. The others were when Gearin and Carney scored off an error by the shortstop from a groundball by Leonardos. The Lions wouldn't score again until the 6th inning when Leonardos singled to score Jones. In the 7th inning they fought hard and scored a run off a wild pitch but they fell short.
The second game only lasted 5 innings as the Engineers jumped on the Emerson pitchers. Kodie Cash pitched one inning giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs. Casey Tsamis pitched 1.2 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 earned runs. Corey closed out the game pitching 2.1 innings allowing 2 hits and one earned run.
Doolin pitched a complete game for WPI giving up 4 hits and one run earning the win bringing her record to 7-1. She also racked up 9 strikeouts in the game.
The Engineers started off hot in the 1st inning scoring 3 runs off an RBI single by Gallgher, an RBI single from Wood, and an error by third baseman Caroline Fortuna. In the 2nd inning, 4 runs were scored off a Murphy-Cook triple, an error by shortstop Goldstein, a groundout by Gurska, and a double by Renee LeClaire. A double by Katie Chagmi and Gurska, and an error by Fortuna scored another 4 runs in the 3rd inning. In the 5th inning Wood doubled scoring Gurska to make the total runs scored 12.
The Lions only run scored came in the 1st inning when Jones scored off a wild pitch. Emerson looks to bounce back when they travel to face Babson for a NEWMAC double header.
