Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. - It was a beautiful day at Rotch Field as the Emerson Lions hosted the Wheaton Lyons for a NEWMAC Softball doubleheader. Emerson fell short in both games in with scores of 11-4 in Game 1 and 12-3 in Game 2 (6 innings). The Lions fall to 8-14 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton rises to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Wheaton struck first when Marissa Timoteo grounded out to second base on a fielder's choice allowing Mary DeMoura to score in the first inning. They would continue their lead in the third inning with 3 runs off a double by Caroline Fairbanks, a single by Kelly Welch and fielder's choice by Jessica Cochrane.
The Lions answered back in the bottom of the third with 3 runs off a homerun by sophomore Kodie Cash, but they would not score again until the bottom of the 7th when Alena Jones scored off Kallista Leonardos' single.
Danielle Cimino improved her record to 4-3 on the win tonight giving up 3 earned runs, 1 walk, and racking up 8 strikeouts. Jillian Rocha pitched the final inning allowing 1 run. Samantha Corey got the start for Emerson giving up 7 hits, 3 walks, and 5 earned runs. Cash relieved her in the 5th inning, who gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs.
Game 2 was a closer as both teams went into the 6th inning 3-3. Wheaton scored the 3 runs in the top of the 2nd from a 3 run homerun by Madeline Hatch off Emerson's sophomore pitcher Casey Tsamis. Emerson's 3 runs came from a 2 run homerun by Jacqueline DeFusco in the 1st inning and a double by Caroline Fortuna in the 2nd inning.
The next 4 innings were scoreless for both teams until Wheaton scored 9 runs in the 6th inning off 10 hits and 2 errors. During the long inning Cash relieved Corey who came into the game in the 3rd inning. Without the Lions responding in the bottom of the 6th, the game ended early due to the 8 run rule.
Next up the Lions travel to Springfield College tomorrow, April 2nd, for a 12:00pm matchup.
