The Lead: Despite a 22-point and seven rebound effort from junior John Geary (Duxbury, Mass.), the Emerson men's basketball team shouldered a 83-78 loss at the hands of Lesley College in non-conference action at Brown & Plofker Gym on Tuesday night.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Geary led the Emerson offense and went 8-for-12 with 22 points and went a perfect 3-for-3 beyond the arc. Sophomore Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.) dished out a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 boards with eight assists. Junior Corey Fitz (Los Altos, Calif.) chipped in 11 points, while classmate Michael Sheng (Altadena, Calif.) added 10 points.
- Senior Devon Mayo led Lesley and went 7-for-10 with 21 points and seven boards, while junior Will Gibson had six assists. Sophomore Charlie Rezinkoff also contributed 21 points off the bench and went 4-for-5 beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Two threes from Geary within a minute span to put Emerson up 6-5 as the Lions held the lead through the first nine minutes of the half.
- Lesley diminished Emerson's seven point lead with a 6-0 run to pull ahead 15-14 at the 11:43 mark and added another six after a three point bucket by Rezinkoff to put the score at 20-14.
- The Lynx maintained a steady 29-25 lead before the Lions answered with the next five points that included two trips to the charity stripe. Sheng and Geary went a perfect four for four to put Emerson back on top at 31-29.
- A trey from Gibson squared the score at 38-all with 48 ticks left on the clock that was followed up a jumper from Fitz to give Emerson the 40-38 at the conclusion of the first half.
- The opening three minutes of the second half saw three lead changes between Emerson and Lesley and continued to go back and fourth before Mayo drained a three from beyond the arc pushed the Lynx ahead by five (61-59).
- Lesley gained its biggest lead of seven at 74-67 on a 10-3 run at the 4:26 mark before Emerson came within two at 74-72 after a three point bucket from Fitz and a trey from sophomore Mac Sashin (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.).
- A 7-3 run with two minutes remaining in the second half once again put Lesley ahead by seven at 81-74 before Emerson battled back with the next four points for a pair of free throws brought Emerson within three at 81-78 with 53 seconds left.
- Mayo closed out the game and sealed Lesley's 83-78 win with a layup.
