Box Score ANNVILLE, Penn. - Senior Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y.) powered out 18 kills and sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) had 34 assists and 13 digs to lead the Emerson women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Manhattanville in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 ECAC Div. III Women's Volleyball Championship at host Lebanon Valley College on Saturday afternoon.
Emerson keeps their season rolling with an overall record of 19-11, while Manhattanville wraps up their season at 18-10. Emerson cruised to a 25-13 first set win before the Manhattanville squared the match with a 25-19 second set win. The Lions went on two take the final two sets, 25-17 and 28-26.
Augustine led the Lions with a team-high 18 digs and three blocks, while Brennan had 34 assists and a match-high 13 digs. Junior Sam Harton (Cartersville, Ga.) had a match-high five aces. Freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.) followed Augustine with 11 kills and three aces, while sophomore Kelley Guerra (Randolph, N.J.) had four aces and sophomore Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) registered 12 digs.
A trio of Manhattanville players had double digits in kills - Asia Reid (14), Austen Bauer (13) and Kerry Mackey (12). Megan Quinabo had three aces and a match-high 38 assists, while Samantha Miano registered 11 digs. Reid also led the Valiants defense with two blocks.
A pair of kills from Augustine and one from senior Amanda Linzmeyer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) helped Emerson take an early 5-0 lead over Manhattanville before the Valiants got on the board after a kill from Bauer. The Lions continued to build onto their lead and pieced together a 5-0 run that included two aces by Harton to go up 10-1. Emerson then gained the 10 point lead at 18-8 before Manhattanville tallied the next five of seven points to come within seven at 20-13, but Edwards dished out three kills to help put the Valiants away in the first set.
Emerson and Manhattanville went back and forth with the lead before it was the Valiants who pulled ahead 9-7 and gained the four point lead at 11-7. Emerson remained close to Manhattanville and came within two at 15-13, but the Valiants tallied seven points to push their lead to eight at 22-14. The Lions surged late in the set and brought themselves within three points at 23-20, however, it was little too late as Reid capped off the 25-19 win with a kill.
The Valiants grabbed the 7-5 lead before the Lions answered with the next five points to take back the 10-7 advantage. Manhattanville came within one at 13-12 after a kill by Reid, but Emerson tallied six more points and pushed their lead to six at 19-13. The Valiants stuck around the came within three of the Lions at 20-17, but a pair of kills from senior Annie Hall (Okemos, Mich.) were included in a 5-0 Lions run to take the third set.
The fourth set was neck-and-neck all throughout and neither team was able to hold a lead for very long. The score never went over two until Manhattanville gained the four point lead at 19-15, but could not hold onto it as Emerson squared the set at 19-all. The final set was evened up for the last time at 26-all on a kill from Reid, but it was Edwards' final two kills that lifted the Lions to a 28-26 comeback win.
Emerson will take on Marymount on Sunday at 1:00 pm in the semifinal round.
