Women's Volleyball Edged Out By Coast Guard, 3-1

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - Despite a 14 kills and 10 digs double-double performance from freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.), the Emerson women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Coast Guard on Tuesday night at the Brown & Plofker Gym in NEWMAC play.

Coast Guard took the first sets, 25-23, before Emerson got on the board in the second at 25-20. The Bears went on to take the final two sets at 25-14 and 25-18. Emerson falls to 15-9 overall and 2-6 in conference action, whereas Coast Guard improves to 14-9 overall and 5-3 against NEWMAC teams.

Junior Angelou Dunton and senior Susan West each tallied 13 kills for Coast Guard as West also led the team with four aces. Junior Emma Saunders, freshman Alexi Deane and sophomore Hailye Reynolds registered three blocks each. Scott also recorded 11 kills, while freshman Makenna Martin had a match-high 43 helpers and junior Michelle McGill tallied 21 digs.

Edwards powered a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs and also had two blocks. Junior Sam Harton (Cartersville, Ga.) led the Lions with 17 digs and two aces. Sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) had 36 assists, while seniors Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Amanda Linzmeyer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each registered eight kills. Junior Halley Dewey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) paced the defense with four blocks.

Five consecutive points by Coast Guard gave the Bears a 9-5 lead to open the first frame and held the advantage at 18-15 before Emerson answered with five points of their own. A 5-1 run by the Lions gave them the 21-20 edge, but the Bears ran up the three final points to edge out the Lions, 25-23.

A pair of kills from Linzmeyer allowed the Lions to jump out to the 11-5 lead over the Bears to begin the second set. Emerson continued to build onto their lead and tallied five more points in a 5-3 streak on two more Linzmeyer kills to put them up 16-8. Coast Guard fired back with five points of their own on a pair of kills from Scott to put the Bears within three at 16-13. The Lions again went ahead at 20-18 before they tacked on four finals points as a kill by Dewey capped off the 25-20 win.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set before Emerson battled back to come within one at 13-12. However, one is the closest the Lions would come to the Bears as they closed out the 25-14 win on six consecutive points.

A kill from Linzmeyer capped off a 12-7 Emerson lead as the Lions hung on to a 15-12 advantage before Coast Guard's offense began to surge once again. A pair of kills from West and Deane helped push the Bears ahead at 19-15. The Lions registered three final points to close the gap at 19-18, but the Bears finished off the set on six points to take the 25-18 win.

Emerson continues its home slate on Thursday night as they host Emmanuel (Mass.) in its annual Dig Pink game at 7:00 p.m. Coast Guard heads to Susquehanna for a non-conference road tilt on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
