Men's Soccer Shoulders 2-0 Defeat to WPI

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - Two first half goes by junior Brendan Nemes (Kingston, R.I.) and senior Matt Farrell (Groveland, Mass.) were enough to lift Worcester Polytechnic Institute over the Emerson men's soccer team in a 2-0 NEWMAC win on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.

Emerson falls to 2-7 overall and 0-3 against NEWMAC opponents, while WPI improves to 7-1-2 overall and 2-1 in NEWMAC action.

Nemes got the scoring started for WPI in the 14th minute of the first half. Recovered off a corner kick by junior Pav Christidis (Fairport, N.Y.), Nemes gained possession of the ball in a crowded inside left post and launched it into the lower righthand corner past the reach of Emerson junior keeper Lucas Fischer (Atlanta, Ga.) to gain the 1-0 lead. Nearing the conclusion of the half, WPI went up 2-0 after Farrell raced into the left side of the box on a midfield pass from freshman Charles Sanderson (Hadley, Mass.).

At the end of the half, Emerson found themselves in a two-goal deficit and were outshot 11-2 by WPI.

The second half saw a much hungrier and physical side out of Emerson and created scoring chances. Though WPI outshot Emerson 11-2 in the opening half, the Lions outshot the Goats 9-4.

In the later minutes of the second, Emerson began to spark some life and began pressured the Goats defense. All alone on the right side, freshman Gavin Faucette (Oakland, Calif.) brought the ball up and crossed a pass to sophomore Max DeLuca (Rockland, Mass.) in front of the net. Deluca's shot barely missed and sailed high with senior Elias Romanos (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) following up with a shot that went wide right. The Lions saw several potential goals just barely miss and fell 2-0 to the Goats.

Fischer was tagged with the loss and made five saves through 90 minutes between the pipes, while junior keeper Jordan Finzel (Northport, N.Y) was credited with the win for WPI with four saves.

Emerson returns to NEWMAC action on Saturday, Oct. 8 as they host Coast Guard for a 1:00 p.m. contest. WPI returns home to face Wentworth on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
