Women's Volleyball Sweeps Curry and Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass - It was a strong day for the Lions as they hosted a Tri-Match on their home court in the Brown-Plofker Gym. The Emerson Women's Volleyball team swept both Curry College and Suffolk University, 3-0. This rises their record to 9-6 overall, while remaining 2-3 in the NEWMAC. The Curry Colonels are now 7-8 overall, as they defeated Suffolk 3-1 in the second match of the day. The Suffolk Rams drop to 4-12 overall with losses to both Emerson and Curry.


In the first match of the day, both the Lions and Colonels showed up ready to play. The lead changed several times, but never by more than a point or two. With the score at 17-17, the Lions went on a run, closing it out with several well placed kills by Jules Augustine, the set ended 25-18. Curry wasn't able to gain any ground in the final two sets, as they closed 25-15 and 25-9.


Stat leaders for the Colonels include Grace Stafford with 7 kills and 11 digs, followed by Nicole Rice who also had 7 kills. Makayla Hughes led in assists with 11, while Courtney Carroll also had 11 digs. Leading for the Lions were Augustine with 14 kills and Brittany Schoellkopf with 11 kills. Elaine Nichols and Moira Brennan had 14 and 11 assists respectively. Sam Harton lead in digs with 10 and 7 assists as well.


In the second match of the day,  Curry was able to best Suffolk, winning 3-1. The sets ended 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, and 25-20 with Suffolk taking the 2nd set. Stat leaders include Curry's Nicole Rice with 12 kills, followed closely by Suffolks Talia Lombardo who had 11 kills and 11 digs.


The Lions would again find success as they defeated Suffolk in the final matchup of the day. The sets ended similarly, 25-12, 25-15, 25-16, with Suffolk slowly gaining some ground.


Leading the charge for Suffolk was Bridget Allison with 5 kills and a block. On the Emerson side Kelley Guerra had 9 kills and 4 total blocks, two of which were solo. Fara Cohen was close behind with 8 kills and 11 digs.


Next up for the Lions is a conference matchup at home against Wheaton on October 6th, at 7:00pm.
