NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Madison Scott had a match-high 16 kills and three blocks while senior Ashley Dumont hit .583 with 14 kills as Coast Guard clinched a spot in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament with a 3-1 win over Emerson.
The Bears improved to 16-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play while Emerson drops to 10-10 overall and 2-6 in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard, which has five games left in the regular season including a pair of conference matches, will be on the road in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament on Nov. 3rd.
Junior Susan West added 13 kills in the win. Senior Maggie Hine had a match-high 48 assists and sophomore Michelle Hernandez led the way with 22 digs.
In the opening set, Coast Guard scored five straight to take a 9-4 lead. The Bears would later use an 8-2 run to open up a 17-7 lead. Emerson would close to 21-15 before the Bears scored the final four points for the 25-15 win.
Emerson would use a 6-1 spurt to open up a 14-10 lead in the second set. The Bears would score four straight to pull even 19-19 before the Lions scored five straight and six of the final seven for the 25-20 win.
Coast Guard led 13-9 in the third set and led 17-14 before Emerson scored four straight to take and 18-17 lead. The Bears would however score four straight and eight of the final ten points for the 25-20 win.
The score was tied 7-7 in the fourth set when Coast Guard scored six straight with Hine serving for a 13-7 lead. Scott was dominant with four kills in that run. The Bears led 17-14 and scored five of the next six to extend the lead to 22-15 en route to the 25-21 win.
Junior Jules Augustine led Emerson with 12 kills, sophomore Sam Harton had a team-high 22 digs and sophomore Elaine Nichols led the Lions with 24 assists to go with 11 digs.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night when the Bears go next door to take on Connecticut College in a non-conference match at 7 pm.
The Lions next matchup is at home agaisnt Lasell on Oct 22nd at 7:00pm.
