Box Score BOSTON, Mass - It was a tough loss for the Emerson Lions, who fought tooth and claw against Trinity College, but came up short, losing 3-2. Trinity rises to 7-8 overall while staying 1-5 in conference play. The Lions are now 9-8 and 2-4 in the NEWMAC.
The Lions started the match slowly, losing the first set 25-13. Trinity, however, slipped in the second set, allowing Emerson to win 18-25; bringing the match to a 1-1 tie.
Trinity pulled ahead in a close third set, which ended 25-20. In this set, Emerson was down 15-6, but their determination proved enough to cause a shift in momentum, allowing them to close the gap and set Trinity on their heels.
Emerson's momentum continued into the fourth set, where Fara Cohen would set up Kelley Guerra for two kills in a row. This caused the Lions to jump ahead, and eventually secure the fourth set for a 2-2 tie.
The fifth set however was when Trinity was able to overcome the Lions, winning the final set and the match 15-7, with a final score or 3-2
Emerson put up a solid fight, keeping the match close with three players having double digit kills. Kelley Guerra lead with 11 kills, while Fara Cohen and Jules Augustine had 10 each. Cohen also had 12 digs. Moira Brennen and Elaine Nichols led the team in assists, with 18 and 16 respectively. Sam Harton and Jess Hamilton lead in digs with 15 and 13 apiece.
Stat leaders for trinity include Kate Giddens with an impressive 17 kills, 6 service aces and 14 digs. She was followed by teammate Hannah Engstrom with 11 kills and 2 aces. Grace Metry lead in digs with 21, while Randi Whitham lead in assists with 26.
The Lions look forward to their next home conference against Babson College on October 13th, at 7:00pm. Trinity's next matchup is on the road against Connecticut College on October 16th, also at 7:00pm.
