Men's Soccer Falls To MIT In NEWMAC Opener

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Emerson Men's Soccer Team opened NEWMAC action Saturday afternoon as they fell in a tough 3-0 loss to the MIT Engineers. The Lions are now 1-2-3 on the year and 0-1 in conference play while MIT moves to 4-0-3 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.

The first half saw the Engineers fire off four shots to Emerson's two with two finding their way to the back of the net as MIT's Chester Chambers set up Joshua Wilson for his first goal of the game with a ball to the outside of the box that Wilson blasted into the lower nearside post to make it 1-0 in the 27th minute.

The Engineers would strike again right at the tail end of the half with only 30 seconds remaining as Kareem Itani cranked a ball in the Lions' box that found it's mark as MIT rolled into the half up 2-0.

The match got a bit more chippy in the second half with two yellow cards being served, but the Emerson defense played clutch as they held their line with Carter Bowers making three saves. EC attempted to slice the deficit four times in the second half, but three of their shots were stopped by goalie Sam Cannon, while junior Jeremy Leder sent a potential tally wide left at 77:55. MIT struck again though as Joshua Wilson sealed the victory when he fired a free kick from five yards outside the box into the lower left corner of the Emerson goal.

The Lions will return to action this Wednesday as they set to travel to Mount Ida for a 7 p.m. start in Newton, Mass.
