Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. – Even with Bianca Buono swinging .571 on the day and Alicia Daniele pitching a shutout into extra innings, the Emerson Softball Team fell in two heartbreakers 5-4 (10) and 2-0 to the visiting Coast Guard Bears Friday afternoon. The Lions are now 13-19 and 2-14 in conference play as the Bears improve to 13-17 and 6-10 in the NEWMAC.
Game one was a pitching duel as Alicia Daniele and Coast Guard's Kristine Kahl went head-to-head, both throwing eight shutout innings before the bats came alive. Coast Guard struck first putting a run across in the ninth that EC answered with an RBI single from Monique Medina to knot it.
The Bears struck back in the 10th inning though, this time putting up four runs on three hits and a costly Emerson error. The Lions showed heart in the bottom of the 10th though as they gave the fans their money's worth with an RBI from Brittany Rochford getting it started. Some two-out lightning awaited EC with Amanda Horton singling to the shortstop for another run to chip away before Jenna Giannelli's single up the middle brought it to within one. CGA composed themselves though and closed it out for the 5-4 win in 10 innings.
Game two looked like it was going to be a similar story as a pitching duel between Emerson's Alexandra Magistro and CGA's Sarah Sorensen struck up as they both threw three complete scoreless innings. The Bears made the difference in the fourth inning though, bringing two across with an RBI double to right center by Kelly Grills that was followed up with an RBI single from Morgan Kings for the only scoring in the game, even as EC left five on base in the 2-0 loss.
The Lions will close out the 2014 regular season tomorrow as they set to host the Clark Cougars in a doubleheader at Rotch Field starting at noon in Boston, Mass.
