Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. – Jackson Wiley's dominant 29 kill day Saturday couldn't bolster the Emerson Men's Volleyball Team as they fell 3-0 to visiting GNAC rivals JWU and Wentworth. With the losses the Lions are now 8-10 on the year and 3-6 in GNAC play while JWU moves to 12-9 and 4-4 and WIT improves to 17-7 and 6-2 in the GNAC.
The first set of the day pitted the Lions against the JWU Wildcats which saw both teams come out swinging with JWU posting a .312 team attack percentage which EC bested with a .333 average. Unforced errors and blocks cost the Lions in the set though as both teams battled off 10 tie scores and six lead changes en route to JWU barely edging Emerson 25-21.
Set two saw the Wildcats come out feisty as they took the lead and never looked back with Shawn Kennedy dropped five kills to lead the floor. JWU also put up three blocks in the set to stifle the Lion offense even as Dimitri Gorenc did work with four kills for a .667 average. The effort wasn't enough to stage a comeback though as Emerson pulled within two, falling 25-23.
Set three the Lions scrapped as they pushed 13 tie scores and six lead changes in the set to make the Wildcats work for it. Jackson Wiley stepped up in the set to light up JWU for seven kills for a .545 attack percentage but attack errors plagued the Lions again that the Wildcats pounced on for a 25-19 final.
The second match of the day saw the Wentworth Leopards against the Lions where EC outhit WIT .250 to .215, but unforced errors bit them again with five attack errors and three ball handling errors. Jackson Wiley led the floor with five kills for a .231 average, but in the end the Leopards chipped away to take a 25-21 win.
Set two saw Wentworth's Ross Burdett heat up for six kills for a .667 average while the Leopard defense stepped up huge with six blocks, three assists and a solo from Alex Potts alone. Wiley continued his dominance though, adding another six kills with the Lions giving it there all as they forced 14 tie scores and 10 lead changes, but in the end WIT prevailed, 25-22.
Three was all it would take for WIT as the offense found a rhythm with a .357 attack percentage and kills coming from seven different Leopards. Wiley again led the floor with four kills, but EC's offense couldn't click into sync as Wentworth took the sweep 25-16.
The Lions return to home GNAC action this Thursday as they set to host the Mount Ida Mustangs at 7 p.m. in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym.
